Africa doesn’t just give you memories. It gives you a new lens through which you see everything else. After 14 days—from the lush greenery of Nairobi to a giraffe pressed against my bedroom window at sunrise—I came home a different person. Here’s what those two weeks looked like. We flew Qatar Airways from JFK, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. The service set the tone for the entire trip before we even touched down on African soil.

The island itself is like nowhere else in the Caribbean. Its green hills, winding roads, and jagged coastline full of hidden beaches with rope swings create a natural sense of intimacy. The hilly terrain also means the island was never overdeveloped. Instead, you’ll find hotels, shops, restaurants, and galleries informed by a boutique sensibility. Even though the island is small and undeniably exclusive, it offers endless options.

What makes Maroma extra special is how close to the beach everything is. The structures were originally built in the 1970s by a Mexican architect, who started with a beachside restaurant and added palapas over time as friends started asking for a place to spend the night, lending a small village feel to the 200-acre resort. Three quarters of the 72 rooms have ocean views, and there are sixteen different categories of accommodations rooms, suites and the grand four-bedroom Villa Maroma. The rooms are all hacienda-style — pretty tiles underfoot and on the walls, soothing earth tones in all the textiles. Our suite had a well stocked mini bar, a hammock on the patio and an outdoor shower. The higher the room category, the more opulent the perks, like a dedicated butler, private yoga classes, a chef cooking your meals in your kitchen, your own pool.

What guests won’t find is plastic anywhere in the room — the topstitched “leather” boxes and trash and recycling bins are made from nopal cactus. Another box in the closet is accompanied by a note letting guests know that they can leave behind gently used items to be passed along to one of the local foundations Maroma supports. The resort employs a sustainability manager, and this is but one of the many initiatives he looks after.

Seven Mile Beach doesn’t play around. Powder-white sand, water so clear it barely looks real and sunsets that shut down the day in style. If you’re coming to Grand Cayman, you want beachfront, top-tier service and that blend of relaxation and luxury that makes you feel like you’ve made it.

Ischia is one of those places that surprises you in the best way. It has all the beauty of Capri, but with a more relaxed, lived-in vibe and fewer crowds. From healing thermal spas to cliffside sunsets and quiet fishing villages, the island has a soul that feels both grounded and luxurious. It’s a destination that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply and truly unwind.
