Just off Istanbul are the Princes' Islands, and Büyükada, the largest of them, is 30 minutes away by ferry, with no cars anywhere on it. Just far enough from the bustling center of the island, past where the restaurants and the crowds are, you find this hotel. Vintage architecture meets a glass elevator down to the water, old and new sitting easily together. Quiet is hard to find in a city this size. This was it—private enough that it starts to feel like the whole place is yours.

There is a version of luxury that just means more staff, more amenities, more polish. Dwarika's offers something else: a courtyard so quiet it seems to have opted out of the city entirely, built from centuries of hand-carved woodwork that one man refused to let disappear. We came to Kathmandu wanting different things, my husband hoping for rest, me hoping for something I couldn't yet name, and found both inside the same set of carved gates. This Virgin Voyages Greek Isle cruise blew me away. It wasn't your typical cruise — the atmosphere was electric, the entertainment phenomenal and there were no surprise fees.
