Hotel Spotlight: Le Martin Boutique Hotel in Saint Martin
Curator’s statement

Le Martin is the kind of property that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto a secret—a seven-room boutique hotel tucked into the hillside above Cul-de-Sac Bay on the French side of Saint-Martin, where owners Marion and Emmanuel have created something genuinely special. It feels more like staying at a wildly stylish friend’s villa than a hotel, with original contemporary art on every wall, rooms named after family members, and a daily poolside breakfast that will ruin you for all future Caribbean mornings. For clients who want intimacy, design, and a truly local experience without sacrificing any comfort or discretion, Le Martin is the answer.

Where to stay in St. Martin

Each of Le Martin's seven uniquely named suites is a small work of art. I stayed in the Georgette Suite (No. 4), a 300-square-foot room with a private terrace and sea views, but what strikes you immediately is the design: a bold blue geometric wallpaper sets the headboard wall against crisp white linens and warm wood surfaces. On arrival, rooms are ready with a bowl of house-baked pastries and a beautifully written welcome booklet that perfectly sets the tone: "Take this opportunity to unplug… You're here to breathe." Room options range from the garden-facing Marius Deluxe Suite (366 square feet, ground floor, accessible) to the generous René Deluxe Suite (440 square feet, the largest, with a sweeping sea view terrace), and the Marcelle & Pierre Family Suite, which connects two rooms for up to four guests.

The pool is the heart of Le Martin, and it earns the title. Surrounded by lush tropical foliage and ringed by a teak deck with cream parasols, it feels like a private jungle lagoon—the kind of spot where an afternoon float turns into an entire day. Breakfast (made to order, not buffet) is laid out poolside each morning (included in all rates), and the table settings alone are worth photographing: terracotta tables, hand-thrown ceramics, and a pink sculptural figurine that doubles as a salt cellar. The common lounge areas are equally impressive—bold contemporary paintings, sculptural white coffee tables, pink swivel chairs, and natural rattan pendants give the whole property the energy of a gallery that also happens to have incredible bay views.

Breakfast is genuinely one of the best I've had in the Caribbean: bowls of fresh tropical fruit and house granola, proper café au lait, everything plated with care by a team that clearly loves what they do. There is no full-service restaurant on property, but the mini-bar is stocked on an honor system (including Billecart-Salmon Rosé by the half-bottle—a lovely touch), and the owners are deeply plugged into the local dining scene and will steer you to exactly the right spots. Grand Case—widely considered the culinary capital of the Caribbean—is about 10 minutes away, and the island's beach club scene at Baie Orientale is equally close.

Breakfast

Le Martin sits in Cul-de-Sac on the quieter, more lush end of the French side, directly across from Îlet Pinel—a tiny protected island you can reach by kayak or small boat right from the hotel (watch for sea turtles en route). The views from the property at sunset are breathtaking: the bay dotted with sailboats, the silhouettes of small islands on the horizon, that golden Caribbean sky. This property is a perfect match for design-conscious couples, honeymooners, and discerning solo travelers who want the warmth of a small inn without sacrificing style. It is not the right fit for clients seeking a large beach resort with multiple pools and organized activities—the beauty here is entirely in the intimacy and the quiet.

Need to know

Breakfast is served 8 to 10:30 a.m. poolside daily (or delivered to your terrace). Don't sleep through it—it's a winner.

A rental car is strongly recommended. Saint-Martin has one main road and cab service is limited, but the hotel has parking, can connect you with rental partners, and can also set you up with taxis.

Grab the hotel's kayaks or SUPs and paddle over to Îlet Pinel—it's just across the water, and sea turtles are common en route. You can also catch the ferry.

Grand Case (the island's culinary gem) is about 10 minutes away; Baie Orientale beach is 10 minutes by car or a 10-minute walk along a scenic coastal path.

The property can be privatized entirely for groups wanting an exclusive, villa-like buyout experience.

A private chef can be arranged for dinner upon request.
