Dorp Hotel sits high on the slopes of a hill in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap neighborhood, and from the moment I walked in I felt at home. Despite being just minutes from the city center, the sense of seclusion is extraordinary. Lush, semi-wild gardens filled with trees and herbs surround the buildings, and in the mornings the only sound is birdsong. It’s the perfect base for exploring Cape Town while having somewhere genuinely special to come back to.
The hotel
Dorp is spread across several Georgian-style buildings cascading down the hillside, and the layout is part of its charm. The main Salon is a plant-filled dining room with floor-to-ceiling arched windows framing Table Mountain, housing the restaurant and reception. The whole compound has a rambling, eclectic feel, more like staying in a house rather than a hotel. It was designed by the late Gail Behr, a creative force whose personality is woven into every detail, from the mismatched furniture to gold-stenciled words on the walls.

Rooms
Every room at Dorp is individually designed, and no two feel the same. We had three rooms during our stay and all were fantastic, with massive bathrooms and views to Table Mountain. The standout for me was Arcadia 1. It had a private balcony where I could sit and watch the mountain change color throughout the day, and a private steam room built into the shower, an unexpected luxury that set the tone for the whole stay.
We visited towards the end of winter and the rooms were incredibly warm and cozy. Heated bathroom floors, heated beds, and radiators meant you never felt the chill, which made the whole experience feel even more indulgent.

Food & drink
The Salon serves unpretentious, home-style dishes made with fresh local ingredients, from rotisserie chicken and hearty salads to a breakfast spread that included everything from shakshuka to passionfruit jam. We ended up eating at the hotel far more than we’d planned because the quality was so consistently excellent and the atmosphere was hard to leave. A highlight for me was the crispy Kingklip fish and chips. Complimentary drinks are available in the lounge, including gin and tonics, which made winding down in the evenings effortless.

Service
The staff at Dorp made the experience. Reception greeted us warmly every single day, and after just one morning the team had memorized our coffee orders. When we mentioned we had early excursions and would miss breakfast, they packed us morning meals without us even having to ask twice.

Who it’s perfect for
Couples looking for a romantic escape, creative travelers who appreciate design and individuality, or anyone who wants to experience Cape Town from its most spectacular vantage point without the formality of a traditional luxury hotel. It would also work well as part of a wider South Africa itinerary, pairing Cape Town with the Winelands or a safari.
Need to know
The hotel sits on a steep hill, so getting in and out by foot isn’t really practical. Ubers are cheap, plentiful, and the easiest way to get around Cape Town from here.
Children over 14 are welcome.
The plunge pool is small, so don’t expect a resort-style pool scene, but that’s very much in keeping with Dorp’s intimate character.
Explore the Bo-Kaap neighborhood for its brightly colored houses, Cape Malay heritage, and excellent local food.
