Luxury Resorts in Southwest Florida: Something for Everyone
Curator’s statement

My parents became snowbirds about 20 years ago—flying south to Florida to escape New Jersey's brutal winter weather, trading frost for sunshine. Over the decades, I've had the pleasure of visiting and staying in some of the area's best properties, sometimes traveling with just my husband, and other times with my kids, so I have lots of thoughts on how to make the most of this area for different types of guests.

Southwest Florida luxury resorts: Jen's perspective

  • Most sophisticated luxury: Four Seasons Naples

  • Best large-scale resort experience: JW Marriott Marco Island

  • Best classic luxury with dual-resort access: Ritz-Carlton Naples

  • Best city-meets-beach luxury: Ritz-Carlton Sarasota

  • Best island escape: South Seas Captiva

JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort

The JW Marriott Marco Island is one of the largest and most amenity-rich resorts on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Sitting on a spectacular stretch of Marco Island beach, the property feels almost like a destination unto itself with an abundance of dining, recreation, and entertainment.

What sets it apart

  • Family atmosphere: Even with adults-only spaces, the family-friendly energy of the resort is unmistakable. The main pool area is lively, with games and activities throughout the day, while younger travelers gravitate toward the arcade, kids’ programming, and organized activities. Multigenerational groups are especially common here.

  • Adults-only enclave: The Paradise by Sirene tower offers a separate adults-only experience with its own rooftop pool and dining venues.

  • Massive spa complex: One of the most expansive spas in the region, offering a full menu of treatments and wellness facilities.

  • Large conference center: The resort frequently hosts major meetings and conventions, contributing to its energetic, social atmosphere.

  • Massive beach: One of the widest stretches of sand in Southwest Florida

  • Extensive amenities: 12 restaurants, a spa, multiple pools, and water sports

Drawbacks

  • The scale can feel crowded during peak season.

  • Service may feel less personalized due to the resort’s size.

  • Some areas feel more “convention resort” than intimate luxury.

Best for

  • Multigenerational families

  • Active travelers who want water sports and entertainment

  • Clients seeking a lively resort environment

Naples Beach Club, A Four Seasons Resort

The Four Seasons Naples represents the most polished and sophisticated luxury experience in Southwest Florida. Built on the historic Naples Beach Club site, it combines contemporary coastal design with the refined service that defines the brand.

What sets it apart

  • Brand-new, highly refined service and design consistent with Four Seasons standards

  • Outstanding dining, including beloved Naples institutions like HB’s on the Gulf and the stylish Merchant Room

  • Luxurious spa and wellness facilities

  • A prime beachfront location close to downtown Naples

  • 30,000 square-foot Sanctuary Spa with thermal circuit

  • Extensive amenities planned including golf and entertainment venues

Drawbacks

  • New resorts sometimes take time to refine service and operations.

  • The atmosphere is more polished than tropical—some travelers find it less “beachy.”

  • The Tom Fazio-designed golf course is still under redevelopment and not yet open.

Best for

  • Luxury travelers seeking the newest property in the market

  • Couples and affluent families

  • Clients prioritizing service and design sophistication

Ritz-Carlton Naples: Two complementary luxury resorts

Many visitors don’t realize that the Ritz-Carlton presence in Naples actually consists of two separate but complementary resorts (The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Beach, and The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón), each offering a different experience. They are connected via shuttle service, and clients at each resort can benefit from the amenities of the other.

The Ritz-Carlton Naples (Beach Resort)

This iconic beachfront property recently completed a major renovation, refreshing guest rooms, public spaces, and multiple restaurants. Newly reopened dining venues and updated pool areas give the resort a modern feel while preserving its classic Ritz elegance. There is also amazing club level access.

The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón

Located a few miles inland, Tiburón provides a quieter club-style environment centered around golf.

Highlights include

  • Two championship Greg Norman-designed golf courses

  • A relaxed resort atmosphere

  • Access to amenities across both Ritz-Carlton properties

  • Waterpark on the Tiburón property

  • Ability to capture a variety of clients due to different room pricing across both properties

Best for

  • Couples and luxury family travelers seeking tranquil sophistication

  • Families with active kids

  • Repeat Ritz-Carlton clients

  • Clients that want nearby access to downtown Naples

South Seas Island Resort

South Seas delivers the most distinctly Floridian island experience of the group. Located on Captiva Island, the resort spans hundreds of acres of coastline, marinas, and natural habitats.

Large portions of the resort were reconstructed following Hurricane Ian, including several signature guest amenities.

Major updates include

  • A rebuilt Beach House restaurant, again serving as a central gathering spot overlooking the Gulf

  • A restored water park and pool complex, a major draw for families

  • Continued upgrades to accommodations and guest facilities

What sets it apart

  • A marina and boating culture uncommon among other Gulf resorts

  • Exceptional shelling beaches and wildlife, on incredible beaches

  • Spacious accommodations, many in condo-style units ideal for longer stays

Drawbacks

  • Accommodations are more condo-style and casual than traditional luxury hotels

  • Service levels vary depending on unit type

  • The resort is still evolving following storm recovery and redevelopment

Best for

  • Families seeking an island adventure

  • Travelers who value nature and boating

  • Clients prioritizing authenticity over five-star polish

  • Clients that don’t mind a ride from RSW airport (as there can be slow moving traffic on Sanibel and Captiva islands)

The Ritz-Carlton Sarasota

Unlike the other resorts on this list, the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota blends urban luxury with beach access. The hotel itself sits in downtown Sarasota overlooking the bay, while guests enjoy access to the private Ritz-Carlton Beach Club on nearby Lido Key (accessible via hotel shuttle).

What sets it apart

  • Easy access to Sarasota’s cultural scene, museums, galleries, and restaurants, including the famed St. Armands Circle

  • Private beach club experience with transportation provided by the resort

  • Strong golf and club amenities at the nearby Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club

  • More cosmopolitan and relaxed vibe than the traditional beachfront resort experience.

Drawbacks

  • Not directly on the beach. The beach club is about three miles away and requires a shuttle or short drive.

  • The resort has more of a hotel feel than a traditional beachfront resort, which may surprise travelers expecting a Gulf-front property.

Best for

  • Couples who want culture, dining, and nightlife alongside beach access

  • Travelers interested in Sarasota’s arts scene, museums, and theater

  • Guests who prefer a walkable downtown environment rather than a secluded resort

Need to know

With several flights per day from around the U.S. to RSW (southwest Florida's main airport), this sliver of paradise is accessible all winter long for a quick escape. Spring is also a wonderful time to visit, yielding lovely sunshine and predictably good weather. Peak seasons are January to February and Easter / spring break. Memorial Day and Thanksgiving see fewer crowds, but are fantastic times to enjoy the area's amazing resorts.
