What is The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line?
The Haven is Norwegian Cruise Line’s “ship-within-a-ship” concept, providing guests with exclusive access to private areas, luxury accommodations, and personalized service. Access is limited to Haven guests via their cruise card, creating a more intimate and elevated experience within the larger ship environment.
There is a common misconception that The Haven is designed only for adults. In reality, it is very well suited for families, particularly those who value space, convenience, and a more relaxed onboard atmosphere.
Spacious suites designed for families
The most compelling reason I recommend The Haven for families is the size and functionality of the accommodations. On our sailing, we stayed in a 2-Bedroom Family Villa Suite, which comfortably accommodated our family and provided a layout that felt more like a private residence than a cruise cabin.
The suite included a separate bedroom for the children, complete with a sofa that converted into bunk beds, their own television, and a private bathroom. The primary bedroom featured a spacious bathroom with a rain shower, dual sinks, and a walk-in closet, along with direct access to the balcony.
The shared living space included a sitting area, table, television, and a bar area with a Nespresso machine and mini refrigerator. The balcony itself was large enough to comfortably seat the entire family, making it an ideal place to relax together.
This level of space allows families to spread out, maintain routines, and enjoy downtime in a way that is difficult to achieve in a standard stateroom.

Our kids loved having their own room in our 2-Bedroom Haven Villa.
A seamless embarkation experience
From the moment we arrived at the Port of Miami, the Haven experience was evident. Dedicated check-in for Haven guests allowed us to move quickly through the process without the typical wait times associated with cruise embarkation.
Guests also have access to a private lounge prior to boarding, although in our case, we were eager to get onboard and begin exploring. For families, this streamlined process helps reduce stress and makes the first day of the vacation far more enjoyable.

Haven guests enjoy escorted, priority embarkation and disembarkation.
Private elevators & ease of movement
Another practical benefit of The Haven is access to private elevators. On a large ship, elevator wait times can be significant, especially during peak hours. Having dedicated elevators eliminates much of this inconvenience and makes it easier to move around the ship efficiently—something that is particularly valuable when traveling with children.
Butler service & personalized attention
Each Haven suite includes the service of a dedicated butler. While some guests may initially be unsure how much they will use this service, it quickly becomes an integral part of the experience.
Our butler assisted with in-suite dining, provided helpful recommendations, and ensured that we were aware of important events and opportunities onboard. The service is attentive without being intrusive and contributes to a more seamless and relaxed vacation.
A private pool deck with space to relax
The Haven’s private pool deck offers a quieter alternative to the main pool areas on the ship. This space includes a pool, hot tubs, lounge chairs, cabanas, and food and beverage service.
For our family, this was one of the most valuable features. The children were able to enjoy the pool without the usual crowds, and there were even times when the space felt nearly private. For adults, an additional sundeck area just above provides a more tranquil environment with additional seating and hot tubs.
This balance allows families to enjoy shared time together while still having access to quieter spaces when needed.

We spent much of our cruise enjoying the Haven's infinity pool and sun deck.
Flexible & refined dining in The Haven Restaurant
Dining flexibility is another major advantage for families staying in The Haven. The Haven Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and is exclusively available to Haven guests.
There is no need for reservations, and guests can dine at their convenience. This eliminates the stress of coordinating set dining times or navigating busy buffet areas, which can be particularly challenging with younger children.
The quality of the food and service also reflects a more elevated dining experience, making it a reliable and enjoyable option for every meal. Kids' menus are available for lunch and dinner.

Haven guests have exclusive access to the Haven Restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Priority access & time-saving benefits
Haven guests benefit from priority access throughout the cruise, which significantly enhances the overall experience. This includes priority embarkation and disembarkation at ports of call, as well as reserved seating areas in onboard theaters.
On Norwegian Luna, we also experienced skip-the-line access for popular attractions such as the Aqua Slidecoaster. This allowed our children to enjoy the experience multiple times without long wait times.
These time-saving benefits allow families to maximize their vacation and spend more time enjoying activities rather than waiting in lines.

Exclusive onboard experiences
Haven guests are also invited to exclusive events, such as the Captain’s Cocktail Reception. This event includes refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to meet the ship’s captain and senior officers.
Importantly, children are welcome at this event, making it a memorable experience for the entire family. Our kids really enjoyed asking the captain their questions. Opportunities like this add a unique and personal touch to the cruise.

A balcony is a must, but having space for all of us to enjoy the views together made it even more special.

My pro tips for families considering The Haven
Book early, especially for larger suites.
Family suites in The Haven are limited and tend to sell out quickly, particularly on newer ships and popular sailing dates.Make full use of the butler service.
Whether it is arranging in-suite dining or assisting with special requests, the butler can significantly enhance your onboard experience.Be sure to take advantage of both The Haven and the rest of the ship!
While The Haven provides a private retreat, the broader ship offers entertainment, activities, and kids’ programs that are worth exploring. The combination of both experiences is what makes this option so valuable.
Based on both my professional expertise and personal experience, I highly recommend The Haven for families sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line. It offers a level of comfort and ease that can transform a cruise vacation into an exceptional travel experience.
If you’re considering a sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line and want to explore The Haven for your family, I’d love to help! Please feel free to get in touch with me whenever you’re ready to start planning.
