We All Carry Something: Healing Through Life's Transitions at Miraval Arizona

Curator’s statement
I've been to Miraval's flagship property in Arizona almost 10 times. That number surprises me, because I'm not someone who keeps going back to the same place. But every time I've shown up there, I've been carrying something different. A loss. A transition. A version of myself I wasn't sure what to do with. And every single time, I've left feeling more like myself than when I arrived. That's not something I say about many places. That's why I keep going back. And that's why, when a client tells me they need more than a vacation—that they need time to step away, to be still, to process things going on in their life—this is the first place I recommend.

Let me tell you what Miraval actually is, because most people get it wrong.
When people hear "wellness resort," they picture cucumber water and a really nice robe. Miraval has both of those things. But that's not why people leave changed.
I'll be honest: The first time I arrived, I didn't know what I was walking into. What caught me off guard was the desert. There's something about being out there in Tucson, surrounded by all kinds of cacti, with the mountains sitting in the distance, that makes you take a breath you didn't even realize you'd been holding. And the nights out there are something else entirely. The sky is so full of stars that it almost doesn't look real. I don't know how else to describe it. You just feel like you finally have some room.

And here's the part that matters if you're in the middle of something hard: You don't have to think about a single logistical thing while you're there. Your meals, activities, classes, and select spa treatments are all included. When you're going through a challenging chapter of your life, not having to make a hundred small decisions every day is more of a gift than people realize. You arrive. You exhale. You figure out the rest from there.
One thing to know going in: Miraval has an actual no-phone policy in the shared spaces on the property. By day two, you'll probably stop thinking about your phone altogether. That stillness—really stepping away from everything pulling at you back home—is usually where things start to move.

A reminder to be present
Come as you are. Literally.
There is something I haven't seen written about Miraval anywhere, and I think it might be the most important thing to say: Nobody is performing here.
You will see people walking from their rooms to the spa and the dining hall in their robes. Not rushing, not apologizing for it. Just walking. That is the dress code. Whatever makes you comfortable, that's it. If staying in your robe for your entire stay is what you need, no one will notice. I have done it. It is liberating in a way that is hard to describe until you've experienced it.

What happens when the pressure to present yourself a certain way is completely removed is remarkable. You start to take up the right amount of space again. You stop performing okay. And when you look around and realize that everyone else there is carrying something too, whether it's right on the surface or tucked somewhere deep, the energy of the whole place shifts. It becomes something rare. A community of people who have quietly agreed to just be human together, without judgment, without pretense, with a kind of collective kindness that I have not experienced anywhere else in the world.
This thread runs through everything at Miraval, down to how Miraval staff introduce themselves. They don't wear name tags with their job title. They wear a single word that represents their true essence, their "I am" statement. And when you arrive, you're invited to choose yours. One word that is meaningful only to you. It becomes a quiet touchstone for your entire stay.

Words of intention all across the property
One of the things I love most about Miraval is that nothing is ever required of you. The culture of the place is that you do what feels right and leave the rest. That extends to one of the most beautiful offerings on the property: At the end of your stay, you're invited to write a letter to yourself. About the journey, the feelings, the moments that traveled with you. You seal it, leave it at guest services, and three months later, Miraval mails it home to you. Some guests say it's one of the most meaningful things they've ever done. You might feel moved to try it. You might not. Either way, the option is there, and that's very much the spirit of this place.
If you're carrying something right now, this is the guide I wrote for you.
Let me be real with you for a second. Most travel content is written for people in a good place who want to celebrate or treat themselves. And that's great. But that's not who I'm talking to right now.
I'm talking to the person who has lost someone they don't know how to live without. The person whose marriage has ended, or whose job has taken an unexpected turn. The one who just dropped their kid off at college and has become an empty nester, drove home to a quiet house, and sat in the driveway longer than they expected before going inside. The one who isn’t fine but keeps saying they're fine, who knows something needs to shift. If any of that is you, keep reading. This one is for you.
We all carry something. Most of us just get very good at not saying so. And after traveling to more than 30 countries and experiencing all kinds of properties, I can tell you that very few places actually understand that, not in a clinical way, but in the way a good friend does. Miraval is one of them. It doesn't ask you to arrive ready. It just creates the space for you to put the weight down for a while. What you do with that space is entirely up to you.

Guests are often encouraged to strike the large Tibetan gong upon arrival. It acts as a symbolic, auditory shift from the outside world into a mindful, tranquil space.
Experiences that have the power to meet you where you are
Before I get into anything else, I want to share something personal, because I think it captures why this place is unlike anywhere I've ever been.
Miraval has a private equine experience called Unforgettable Canvas. And the name is exactly right. You go out to the ranch, and you paint directly on the horses. On them. With non-toxic water-based paint, your hands, and whatever is sitting inside you in that moment. No instruction, no structure, no right way to do it. You're not trying to create something beautiful. You're just present with the horse, connecting through touch, color, and whatever comes up. And then at the end, you wash them. There's something about that, caring for them afterward, that closes the loop in a way I still think about.
I'm sharing a picture of my Unforgettable Canvas experience with Cherokee (I made it a point to visit him during each visit). It was a transformative experience having a horse as my canvas to express all that I was feeling. It is not a masterpiece. It is honest. And that's exactly the point. Something real and imperfect says more about what Miraval actually offers than any resort photo ever could.

Unforgettable Canvas—my painting of Cherokee
So when I say book an Equine Experience, I say it as someone who has tried several of them across almost 10 visits, each one different, each one meeting me exactly where I was at that point in my life. Not because I'm a horse person. But because horses respond to what you're actually feeling, not what you're performing. They can't be fooled. What they reflect back is honest in a way that's rare, and for people carrying something heavy, that honesty has a way of surfacing things you didn't know you were holding. There are several different equine experiences to choose from, depending on where you are and what you need. Ask when you book.
If you do nothing else, book a Wellness Counseling session. This is not therapy. It's also not spa small talk. The specialists here bring real depth and genuine compassion to these conversations. I've been in many sessions at Miraval and walked out feeling like something that had been stuck for a long time finally had a little more room to breathe. Some things just need a witness, and the right person in that room can be that for you.
The Life in Balance Spa is genuinely among the best I've experienced anywhere, but go beyond what you already know. Two treatments worth seeking out: the CaraDorada Facial, which does something remarkable for both your skin and your nervous system, and the Deep Massage, which works through tension you didn't even realize you were holding. Book these before you arrive. They fill up, and you will not want to have missed them.
The Spirit & Soul offerings—things like the labyrinth walk, which I do during each visit, forgiveness meditation, and sound healing—can feel like a reach if that's not usually your world. I get it. Try one anyway, especially if you're skeptical. The sessions that felt the most unfamiliar to me have consistently been the ones that stayed with me the longest.
And if you're in a place where you're questioning what you're capable of, I encourage you to do the Challenge Course. It's an aerial ropes course experience about deciding to move forward when everything in you wants to stay frozen. That's not a small thing. For many people, it's the moment the trip becomes something they carry home with them.

A word about the other Miraval properties
Miraval also has properties in Austin, Texas, and in the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Both are beautiful and carry the same philosophy, so if Arizona feels too far, know that the experience travels with them.
I continue to return to Arizona. It's where Miraval started, and you can feel that. There's a depth to the desert, the sky at night, that I haven't found anywhere else. It's the one I recommend as your first Miraval experience.
And if an overnight stay feels like too much of a commitment, all three locations offer a day package. You arrive in the morning and have access to the spa, the pools, daily activities, yoga, meditation, a gourmet lunch, and treatments or sessions. It runs until 5 p.m. For someone who just needs a day to breathe, to be still, to remember what quiet feels like, that alone can be enough to start something.

Need to know
How long to stay
Three nights if you have limited time; however, staying four or five nights is where something real happens. I've seen clients go for three nights and feel like they were just getting into their personal journey when they had to leave.
What's included
Lodging, meals, and activities are all covered. Each night includes resort credits toward spa treatments, equine activities, and specialty experiences.
Who comes here
People come to Miraval alone, with a close friend, as a couple, or in small groups. What I've noticed is that it works for all of it. Solo travelers tend to find connection in the communal nature of the experience without it ever feeling forced. Friends who come together often describe it as the trip that changed something between them. Couples find a different kind of closeness when the noise of everyday life goes quiet. However you arrive, there's room for you here.
This I know for sure
Nobody leaves Miraval the same way that they arrived. Not because it promises anything, because it doesn't. But because when you finally give yourself permission to slow down and be present, to feel what you've been carrying, to just be somewhere that asks nothing of you, something in you just shifts. It doesn't always look like a breakthrough. Sometimes it's quieter than that. A thought that finally has room to breathe. A feeling you can name for the first time. That's enough. That's actually everything.
