Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park are two of my favorite places to recommend for anyone looking to combine outdoor adventure with a relaxing getaway. While many people think of the area as just a beach destination, there's so much more to experience. I love that I can spend the morning hiking through towering sand dunes and peaceful forests, then cool off with a walk along the beaches of Lake Michigan.

The ever-changing dunes make every visit feel like the first.

The steepest trail often leads to the best views.
One of my favorite ways to explore the area is by bike. The scenic trails and quiet roads connect beautiful beaches, nature preserves, and charming lakefront communities. Whether I'm looking for a challenging ride or a leisurely afternoon exploring, there's always another route to discover. Every season offers something different, which keeps me coming back throughout the year.

Cycling the Calumet Trail is one of my favorite ways to explore the Indiana Dunes.

Every climb is rewarded with a new perspective.
After a day outdoors, I enjoy exploring the local food and drink scene. From casual lakeside restaurants to locally owned cafés, wineries, and craft breweries, there are plenty of places to relax and unwind. I also like visiting nearby towns such as Chesterton, Beverly Shores, and Michigan City, where you'll find unique shops, local events, and beautiful lakefront views.

The best adventures begin where the boardwalk ends.

Peace is never far when you're by Lake Michigan.
I recommend this destination to solo travelers, couples, families, and anyone who enjoys hiking, biking, beaches, and nature. It's also a great choice for travelers from Chicago or Indianapolis looking for an easy escape without sacrificing outdoor adventure. Whether you're seeking an active weekend or simply a place to slow down and enjoy Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes is a destination I always look forward to visiting.

Every adventure deserves an unforgettable sunset.

Even in winter, the trails have a story to tell.
Need to know
If you enjoy local food and drinks, don't miss the restaurants, wineries, and craft breweries throughout Chesterton, Beverly Shores, Valparaiso, and Michigan City. The area has a great mix of casual beachside spots and locally owned favorites that are perfect after a day outdoors.
For travelers who want to explore beyond the dunes, the South Shore Line makes it easy to take the train into downtown Chicago without worrying about traffic or parking. It's a great option if you want to combine outdoor adventure with a day of sightseeing, museums, shopping, or dining in the city.
No matter the season, I recommend slowing down and taking time to enjoy the sunsets over Lake Michigan. It's one of the experiences that keeps bringing me back to the Indiana Dunes.
