Sailing the Mediterranean aboard Celebrity Ascent is an ideal way to experience several of Europe’s most beautiful destinations while enjoying the comfort of a modern, upscale ship. This itinerary combines Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece, creating a wonderful mix of ancient history, Adriatic scenery, charming coastal towns, beaches, and incredible food. I especially love the variety: One day can be spent exploring centuries-old streets and archaeological sites, while the next might involve turquoise water, a leisurely waterfront lunch, or simply enjoying the scenery.

Celebrity Ascent is particularly well suited to travelers who appreciate contemporary design, elevated dining, and a more refined atmosphere while still wanting plenty to do onboard. Sea days are an important part of the experience, giving travelers time to slow down between busy port days, enjoy the pool and outdoor spaces, book a spa treatment, or try another restaurant or bar. I recommend leaving some room in the schedule to enjoy the ship rather than treating it only as transportation between destinations.

The ports are what make this itinerary especially memorable. In Sicily, I recommend venturing from Messina to Taormina for its beautiful streets, ancient Greek Theatre, and views toward Mount Etna. Dubrovnik is perfect for walking the historic city walls, while Split offers the fascinating Diocletian’s Palace and a lively waterfront. Corfu brings a more relaxed Greek-island atmosphere, Katakolon provides access to Ancient Olympia, and Naples is an excellent finale for travelers interested in Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, or authentic Neapolitan pizza.

I would recommend this sailing for couples, honeymooners, friends, first-time Mediterranean cruisers, and travelers celebrating a milestone. It’s especially appealing to clients who want to see several destinations without repeatedly changing hotels or arranging transportation between countries.

Need to know

A little advance planning makes a Mediterranean cruise much more enjoyable. I recommend arriving in Rome at least one or two nights before embarkation, both to adjust to the time difference and to protect against unexpected flight delays. Keep in mind that Civitavecchia is outside central Rome, so travelers should allow plenty of time for the transfer to the cruise terminal on embarkation day.

This itinerary includes several active sightseeing days, so comfortable walking shoes are essential for cobblestone streets, hills, and ancient sites. During the warmer months, pack lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle, along with a light layer for evenings and modest clothing for visiting churches and religious sites. Popular excursions—especially Taormina, Dubrovnik, Olympia, and experiences from Naples to Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast—are worth reserving in advance.

If exploring independently, always double-check the ship’s all-aboard time and allow extra time to return to port. Most importantly, avoid trying to fit everything into every stop. Choosing one or two memorable experiences, enjoying a leisurely local meal, and leaving time to wander often creates a much better Mediterranean experience than rushing through a long sightseeing checklist.
