Fiji: A Top Romantic Destination for Couples
Curator’s statement

The heart of Fiji is its people. Their warmth is genuine, their hospitality effortless, and their welcoming spirit sets the tone for an unforgettable stay. The DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Fiji – Sonaisali Island offers a peaceful, island style escape without the long transfers typical of remote destinations. Although it feels like a private island retreat, the resort is conveniently located just off the coast of Viti Levu and is accessed by a complimentary 24/7 boat ride from the mainland jetty. After landing at Nadi Airport, you can be relaxing at the resort in about 25 minutes. The property features a spacious lagoon-style pool with sweeping views of the Mamanuca Islands, a lively swim-up bar perfect for enjoying cocktails in the water, and a wide range of activities to keep your days as relaxed or adventurous as you choose.

Fiji is often celebrated as one of the world’s most romantic destinations, thanks to its breathtaking natural beauty, luxurious accommodations, and the warm, genuine hospitality that defines Fijian culture. During our stay, my wife and I were able to fully unwind—waking up to sunrise views and ending each evening with vibrant sunsets right from our beachfront bure, all while listening to the soothing rhythm of waves along the shore.

Although Fiji is ideal for couples, the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Fiji – Sonaisali Island also offers plenty of activities for children, making it a versatile choice for families as well.

Getting to the resort is simple and efficient. It’s about a 30 minute taxi ride from Nadi International Airport, followed by a quick 15 minute boat transfer from the mainland jetty. The boat operates 24/7 and is complimentary, which makes the arrival experience smooth at any hour. For the best experience, I highly recommend reserving one of the spacious beachfront bures—they offer privacy, comfort, and unbeatable ocean views.

Dining is easy and enjoyable with three on site restaurants offering a mix of relaxed, buffet, and à la carte options. Whether you’re in the mood for something casual or a more elevated meal, there’s always a great choice available.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting a local Fijian village. We were welcomed with traditional music, food, and dance, and had the opportunity to participate in cultural ceremonies that offered a deeper connection to the community. I even joined a basket making activity, which was a memorable and meaningful way to experience Fijian craftsmanship firsthand.

Need to know

The overnight flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Fiji takes approximately 11 hours. Because it’s a long-haul journey with extended periods of sitting, I recommend wearing compression socks to support circulation and keep your legs comfortable throughout the flight.

Upon arrival in Nadi, transportation is simple and affordable. Taxis typically cost between $20–25 USD, and once you reach the mainland jetty, the 15 minute boat ride to the resort is complimentary and operates 24/7, making the transfer seamless at any hour.

While the best time to visit Fiji is during the dry season (May through October), my wife and I traveled in March, which falls within the rainy season. Even so, we experienced sunshine for nearly our entire stay—it rained only once during our seven days on the islands.

Tipping in Fiji is not required, but bringing a few extra dollars is a thoughtful gesture. Housekeepers, servers, and other staff members truly appreciate it, and the service you receive is consistently warm and attentive.
