Curator’s statement
Kathmandu is a fascinating destination where ancient traditions, spirituality, and vibrant everyday life come together. I loved experiencing the city’s historic temples, colorful streets, and unique culture while seeing how deeply Buddhism and Hinduism are woven into daily life. The energy of Kathmandu is completely different from India, yet it feels like a natural continuation of an India journey, making it an ideal extension for travelers who want to experience more of South Asia. Adding Kathmandu provides a wonderful opportunity to step into Nepal’s rich culture and history while experiencing the gateway to the Himalayas.

Kathmandu is an incredible addition to an India itinerary, offering a fascinating introduction to Nepal’s rich culture, history, spirituality, and connection to the Himalayas. The Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by green, terraced hills and is home to a remarkable mix of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. I loved how the ancient architecture and temples exist alongside the energy of modern Kathmandu, creating a destination that feels both historic and very much alive.

The cultural experiences throughout the valley were a highlight. Kathmandu Durbar Square offers a glimpse into Nepal’s royal history and traditional architecture, while the bustling Ason Market provides an opportunity to see everyday life unfold among local shoppers and vendors. At Swayambhunath, the “Monkey Temple," we experienced the spiritual side of Kathmandu, including monks chanting prayers and pilgrims visiting the ancient stupa. Boudhanath was another favorite, with its enormous stupa surrounded by monasteries, prayer wheels, monks, and pilgrims making their ritual circumambulation. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to interact with monks and visit a gallery where traditional Thangka paintings were being created.

Mt. Everest

Beyond Kathmandu itself, the nearby cities of Patan and Bhaktapur are well worth including. Patan is known for its incredible artistry, metalwork, wood and stone carvings, and beautiful temples, while Bhaktapur feels almost like an open-air museum filled with historic squares, pagodas, and traditional architecture. Experiencing a Himalayan singing bowl demonstration in Patan added another memorable and uniquely Nepalese element to the trip.

For clients adding Kathmandu to an India journey, I highly recommend including time for both the cultural sights and a Himalayan experience. One of the most memorable parts of this itinerary was the scenic mountain flight offering views toward Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Kathmandu is particularly well suited to travelers who enjoy history, architecture, spirituality, culture, and unique local experiences, and it makes a wonderful extension for anyone who wants to experience another side of South Asia without needing to commit to a longer Nepal trekking adventure.

Need to know
Kathmandu is best experienced at a relaxed pace, allowing time to explore the temples, markets, and historic sites without rushing from one attraction to the next. Many of the cultural sites involve walking, uneven surfaces, stairs, and crowds, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Be prepared for a mix of bustling city streets and peaceful spiritual sites, and take time to simply observe the daily rituals, prayer wheels, monks, and local life happening around you.
I also recommend including at least one experience that goes beyond traditional sightseeing. The scenic mountain flight for views of Mount Everest was a memorable highlight, while visiting Boudhanath, interacting with monks, seeing Thangka artists at work, and experiencing a Himalayan singing bowl demonstration provided a deeper connection to Nepalese culture and traditions.
For travelers adding Kathmandu to an India itinerary, I think three to four days is a great amount of time for an introduction to the city and surrounding valley. The combination of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur offers an incredible variety of history, architecture, art, and spirituality without requiring a trekking-focused trip. Kathmandu is a wonderful extension for travelers who want to experience Nepal’s unique culture and get a taste of the Himalayas while still enjoying a comfortable, culturally immersive journey.
