Exploring Skagway: Family, Rails & Gold Rush Tales
Curator’s statement

We took the White Pass Railway in Skagway up through the snow-covered mountains. We went in mid-May, and it was actually snowing in the mountains while we were there—it was gorgeous. The dramatic scenery of canyons, gorges, and waterfalls kept us captivated as we rolled by on this vintage train. Then we hopped onto a bus for a ride further north into Yukon Territory, Canada. There we stopped to take in the serene and expansive Tutshi Lake, took a picture at the famous Yukon sign, and spotted bears and moose as we drove by. This shore excursion was our favorite by far for this trip.

I would definitely recommend taking this shore excursion with the White Pass Railroad and bus into Yukon Territory. The train ride was amazing, and we liked that it was narrated almost the entire way. We got to hear so much history on Skagway and the Gold Rush times.

The beautiful train!

Cool sign post

We made several stops on the bus portion of the trip. The longest was at the Yukon Suspension Bridge, which was fun to cross with its swaying high up in the air. There is a gorgeous cliffside restaurant there with delicious homemade buns and bison chili—don’t miss this!

The bus driver stopped for us to take in Tutshi Lake, which was so beautiful and peaceful. We also took family photos at the famous Yukon sign and Alaska sign, which are definitely going into our family Christmas card this year, and got to play in the snow a little as snowflakes fell around us. The train returned us to the city of Skagway, where we were able to explore the streets and a couple of restaurants, including the famous Klondike Doughboy. The kids also panned for gold.

This excursion is perfect for all ages, and our family, with two teens and a 7-year-old, really enjoyed it.

Need to know

Sit on the left side of the train for the best views going up into the mountains. Take binoculars. Look out for wildlife as you drive by.
