Where to stay in Madeira

From the moment I arrived at Hotel Riu Madeira, I knew I was in for a special kind of island escape. Set against the dramatic Atlantic coastline in the quiet seaside town of Caniço de Baixo, the resort is surrounded by sea, cliffs, and sky—a perfect blend of serenity and scenic beauty. The staff were warm, professional, and genuinely attentive throughout my stay, creating an easygoing atmosphere that made everything feel seamless. Whether I was enjoying a peaceful morning coffee with ocean views or winding down with a drink at sunset, there was an undeniable rhythm to life here that made every moment feel relaxed, yet refined.

One of the many things I appreciated was how effortlessly connected the resort is despite its tranquil location. The airport is just a short drive away—no more than 15 minutes—which made arrival and departure completely stress-free. I also found the hotel to be a great base for exploring the island. I pre-booked a day trip to hike Madeira’s famous “Stairway to Heaven” trail (the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike), a bucket list experience made even easier by the tour company’s hotel pick-up and drop-off service. It’s an adventure I’d absolutely recommend, and one I’d be happy to arrange for clients looking for a mix of nature and activity.

In addition to hiking, I joined a full-day island tour that provided a fantastic overview of Madeira’s diverse landscapes, from the volcanic natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz, to lush waterfalls, a working banana farm, and vibrant Funchal, with its colorful markets and historic charm. The convenience of hotel pick-up made these excursions hassle-free and allowed me to fully relax and enjoy the island’s incredible variety.

The property itself is beautifully maintained, with a modern, coastal aesthetic that feels both polished and inviting. Two outdoor pools—one infinity-style with sweeping ocean views—offer the perfect place to relax under the sun, while the indoor pool and wellness area provide a tranquil escape on cooler days. The resort’s all-inclusive offering includes multiple dining options, from expansive buffets featuring international and local cuisine to à la carte meals served with oceanfront ambiance. There’s also a full-service spa, a well-equipped fitness center, and access to the scenic coastal promenade for peaceful morning walks. In the evenings, guests can enjoy nightly entertainment that changes daily—from live music and themed performances to dance shows and cultural showcases, adding a lively, social dimension to each night. Whether you’re looking to stay active, indulge in spa time, or simply unwind with a cocktail by the water, Hotel Riu Madeira delivers an experience that feels both elevated and effortless.

Madeira is a rare blend of natural drama and effortless elegance. At Hotel Riu Madira, I felt both completely relaxed and subtly energized—waking each day to the sound of the ocean and ending it with sunsets that seemed almost cinematic. There’s a sense of peace here that’s hard to describe, like the island is quietly showing you how to slow down and really see again. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Need to know

Madeira enjoys mild, year-round weather, but the best time for outdoor activities and hiking is between May and September, when rainfall is lower and days are sunnier. Keep in mind, the summer months of June to August tend to attract more tourists, so if you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in May or September. Spring offers lush landscapes and blooming flowers, while autumn provides pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

Getting around: While Hotel Riu Madeira is conveniently close to the airport (just a 15-minute drive), exploring the island is easiest with a rental car or guided tours. Public transportation is limited and can be confusing for visitors. For stress-free excursions, I highly recommend booking tours that include hotel pick-up and drop-off, like the ones I took for hiking and island sightseeing.

Local hot spots: Though the resort’s all-inclusive amenities are extensive, don’t miss a trip to Funchal, Madeira’s vibrant capital. Visit the colorful Mercado dos Lavradores market, stroll through historic streets, and sample Madeira’s famous fortified wine at a local wine lodge. For nature lovers, the natural pools of Porto Moniz and levada walks through stunning mountain trails are must-dos.

Packing tips: Bring comfortable walking shoes for hiking and exploring the island’s rugged terrain. Lightweight layers are key, as temperatures can vary between coastal and mountainous areas. Don’t forget swimwear, sunglasses, and sunscreen for pool and beach days, plus a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.

Cultural considerations: Madeira is warm and welcoming, but it’s good to remember that local customs are relaxed yet respectful. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly. Also, try to learn a few Portuguese greetings—locals appreciate the effort!

Who this trip is for: Hotel Riu Madeira is ideal for travelers seeking a luxurious, all-inclusive coastal retreat with easy access to nature and culture. It suits couples on romantic getaways, families wanting fuss-free comfort, and active travelers eager to explore Madeira’s unique landscapes. Whether you want to hike, relax by the pool, or discover local culture, this resort makes it effortless.

No matter your reasons for visiting, Hotel Riu Madeira offers a beautifully balanced blend of relaxation, adventure, and authentic island charm that will leave you longing to return.
