There are few places in the world where you can sip your morning espresso while watching elephants roam freely through the jungle below—and Anantara Golden Triangle is one of them. Set high on a ridge overlooking the confluence of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar, this property is more than a resort: it’s a full immersion into nature, culture, and conservation.
Why I recommend it
The setting alone is cinematic. My suite overlooked rolling green hills cloaked in mist each morning, with occasional elephant sightings right from my balcony. But what truly sets this property apart is its heart. Anantara partners with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, and the connection you form with the elephants here feels personal and unforgettable.

One afternoon, I joined the “Walking with Giants” experience—no riding, no performances, just time to walk side by side with these gentle beings, learning their personalities and stories from their mahouts. I’ll never forget being followed by a baby elephant who kept trying to grab my shirt with his trunk.
Insider tips
All rooms are suites and come with spacious balconies and soaking tubs with jungle views. Ask for a room in the corner for even more privacy and panoramic vistas.
The Northern Thai tasting menu at Sala Mae Nam is a must. Don’t miss the khao soi—it’s easily the best I’ve had in Thailand.
Take the boat trip along the Mekong—it’s a peaceful, cinematic experience, and you’ll pass local fishermen and golden temples along the way.
Who it’s perfect for
Wildlife lovers, honeymooners, and families with curious kids. It’s also great for those looking to disconnect—there’s no loud nightlife or urban buzz here. Instead, it’s all about slow mornings, meaningful experiences, and deep rest.

Best room to book
For a truly immersive experience, spend at least one night in a Jungle Bubble—it’s unlike anything else, offering 360-degree views of the sky and close (but safe) proximity to the elephants. For the rest of your stay, the Three Country View Suites offer spacious layouts and sweeping views of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.
I stayed in one of the Jungle Bubbles for a night, and it was magical. Falling asleep under the stars with rescued elephants grazing nearby is something I’ll never forget. The main suites offer comfort and charm with teak wood, daybeds overlooking the valley, and some of the best bathtubs in Thailand. Dining is fresh, locally inspired, and best enjoyed on the terrace with views of the misty Mekong below.
Final thought
Anantara Golden Triangle is the kind of place that changes you. You come for the elephants and the view—but you leave with a renewed appreciation for conservation, connection, and the beauty of Northern Thailand. I can’t wait to go back.
Need to know
All stays include full-board dining, transfers, and one activity per day, which makes it feel truly all-inclusive and stress-free. The property is remote—about an hour from Chiang Rai Airport—so it’s best for travelers who want to disconnect and slow down. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for cooler mornings, and insect repellent if you plan to spend time outdoors. The elephant encounters are intimate and book up quickly, so it’s best to schedule them in advance.
Insider tip
Schedule your elephant experience for early morning when the light is soft, the air is cool, and the setting feels extra magical. And don’t miss the sundown cocktails on the viewing terrace—it’s the perfect spot to reflect on the day as the sky turns gold over the Mekong.
