Hotel Rhinoceros: Your Roman Stay You Didn't Know You Needed
Curator’s statement

I stayed at the Rhinoceros twice in 2024, and I cannot emphasise enough how perfect the location is for people wanting to get around and explore the Eternal City. Once you add to the equation that the hotel is beautifully designed—down to the tiniest of details, the staff is some of the most helpful I came across at similar stays and you can wine and dine with a beautiful rooftop view of the city... well, that is hard to top. (And trust me on this one!)

As the title says: I didn't know I needed it, but once experienced, I knew I couldn't do without. I was born and raised in Rome, and while I admit I am partial to the city and am ALWAYS in awe when I visit, I can say with conviction that I am not generally surprised by accommodation to the point of amazement.

This changed quickly the very first time I stayed at Hotel Rhinoceros in July 2024.

Established by Alda Fendi, a Roman by birth, in 2018, right below the hill where Rome is said to have been born, her love of the city is obvious when looking at the tasteful restoration work done in partnership with Jean Nouvel: A large part of the old structure of the building and its details have been retained, restored and seamlessly interlocked with modern materials, as if they were meant to be.

Don't believe me? Here's a little insight into what welcomed us during our two visits.

The apartments:

Both apartments we stayed in were stunning: spacious living areas, exposed brick walls, wooden beams on the ceiling, steel wardrobes and cabinets and a jaw-dropping view of the Arch of Janus and its surroundings.

Arch of Janus

Their kitchens come equipped with high-end appliances to suit any possible cooking and dining needs and a fridge with a selection of local cold cuts, eggs, butter, yogurt, milk and water. While we planned to eat out as often as possible, it was nice to have food available when we craved a snack.

The king-size beds are super comfortable, the bedding is soft and we slept soundly every night. The foldable blinds, with pictures showing what the building looked like before its renovation, made sure no light came through!

As for the bathrooms, they were fit for emperors: bathtub and walk-in rain shower, double sink and Acampora products to choose from. Getting ready felt luxurious as it never had before!

Hotel Bathroom

As for the rest of the apartment: they had plenty of space to store our clothes and belongings (the second one has a large walk-in closet!), an interactive panel for room temperature and lighting, dining and coffee tables, a comfy sofa and a smart TV.

Apartments are suitable for max, 2 adults, as they are either equipped with twin beds or a double bed, with the option to request a cot.

The art gallery:

On the ground floor of the building, with huge windows overlooking the street, the gallery regularly updates its exhibits and is not to be missed!

The guest experience:

Our check-in and check-out experiences went by swiftly and without a hitch, and our suitcases were in our room in a heartbeat while we were given a tour of our home away from home.

As repeat guests, we received a complimentary upgrade to a Master Suite apartment, which was a nice surprise and made us feel genuinely valued.

During our stay, most of our communication with the staff happened through WhatsApp, from requesting the sweet and savory baskets for breakfast (highly recommended!) to recommendations or questions. The answers came quickly, and we were never left to wonder. For those wanting to sightsee without getting tired, the hotel offers electric golf carts for a reasonable fee.

The staff:

The staff has been truly attentive and exceptional and an integral part of our perfect vacation. We were welcomed warmly and professionally, and the attention we received sets the bar really high for other comparable businesses in the area.

The restaurant and cocktail bar:

On our last evening, we had dinner booked at the hotel's dining spot, and I am so glad we decided to reserve there. Unfortunately we ran out of time to visit the highly rated Rooftop Bar: a mistake we will definitely remedy upon our next visit.

Need to know

Travelling by car? The hotel can arrange a parking spot for you, just let them know that you will be arriving by car.
Light sleepers? Rome can be fairly noisy at certain times, so make sure to pack earplugs or ask the hotel to get you some, and you will sleep like the Ancient Romans did.

The Rhinoceros isn’t just a hotel; it’s an experience. If you’re looking for a place that combines history, comfort and exceptional service, this is the spot for you.
