Cannstatter Volksfest takes place at the Cannstatter Wasen, a 25-hectare fairground in Stuttgart’s Bad Cannstatt district along the scenic Neckar River.

Founded in 1818 to celebrate agriculture and boost morale after crop failures, the inaugural festival featured agricultural displays and the iconic “Fruchtsäule” (Fruit Column) donated by King Wilhelm I. Today, it is the second-largest beer festival in the world, attracting over four million visitors each year.

Visitors can expect a lively mix of beer tents, rides, and cultural events. Eight major beer tents offer food, drink, and festive ambiance, while the Alpine Village provides a cozy setting with Tyrolean specialties. The festival also features over 50 rides and attractions, from traditional carousels to modern thrill rides, plus games and stalls. A colorful parade on the first Sunday showcases marching bands, floats, and traditional costumes, celebrating the region’s rich heritage.

My favorite tent is the Göckelesmaier Tent, affectionately known as the "Chicken Tent." Renowned for its crispy roasted chicken ("Göckele"), it offers a traditional Swabian dining experience. Guests can reserve a table for 10 people, which includes food and drink vouchers.

Reservations are highly recommended, as most tents sell out up to six months in advance, especially on weekends. For reservations, visit the official website.

Need to know

Practical tips for first-time visitors include taking public transportation to the Wasen, as parking can be limited, and wearing traditional Bavarian attire such as dirndl or lederhosen if you like, though it is not required. Admission is free, but tent reservations are recommended during busy periods. Hotels in Stuttgart fill quickly, so it’s wise to book accommodations well in advance, especially if you plan to stay overnight.

We always stay at the B&B Hotel Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, which is located right across from the festival grounds, making it walking distance to the fest.
