Site Inspection at Goldener Hirsch, Auberge Resorts Collection in Deer Valley, Utah
Curator’s statement

In January 2024, I had the opportunity to conduct a site inspection at the Goldener Hirsch, Auberge Collection, located in Deer Valley, Utah. Having been awarded the prestigious 2023 #1 Resort Hotel in the U.S. by Travel & Leisure, as well as serving as the location for a movie, my expectations were high. As frequent visitors to the region and well-acquainted with its five-star hotels, I was eagerly looking forward to seeing if this boutique property lived up to the hype. To my delight, I found the resort to be exceptional, boasting an intimate, luxurious experience with impeccable service in a great location. Without a doubt, I would eagerly choose to stay here again.

The Goldener Hirsch is located about 45 minutes from Salt Lake City Airport in the mid-mountain Silver Lake area of Deer Valley. The Inn was built over 30 years ago by a family who had visited Salzburg, Austria, and wanted to bring the charm of that area back to Utah. In 2020, a new Goldener building was erected across the street from the Inn but connected by an over-street walkway. The new Goldener is mountain-inspired but more modern in its architecture and decor. In 2021, Auberge took over the management of the resort, and in 2022 the Inn underwent a soft refurbishment.

Rooms

Goldener Hirsch has 68 rooms. The Inn has 18 rooms in total that consist of:

  • King Beds

  • King Beds with Balconies

  • Junior Suites, some with sleeper sofas

  • One-bedroom Suites with king beds and sleeper sofas.

All the rooms in the Inn have balconies and wood-burning fireplaces. The Inn has authentic pieces of art and furniture from Austria.

The Goldener has 50 rooms in total that consist of:

  • Kind Beds

  • King Beds with balconies

  • Studio Suites

  • One, two and three-bedroom Residences.

Two-bedroom residences either have two king beds or a king and two queens. Three bedroom residences can have all king beds or two kings and two queens. All residences have Wolf-Subzero kitchens. All resort rooms have daily housekeeping service as well as nightly turn-down service. There are no plastic water bottles at the resort, but housekeeping brings large glass bottles of cold water to the rooms during their service. I stayed in a two-bedroom residence. It was truly luxurious and the best home away from home I have ever had with filtered water, desks, washer/dryer, a steam shower, comfortable dining, living room furniture, heated flooring and floor to ceiling closets not only in the bedrooms but also in the hallway which are perfect to store all your outdoor gear.

Amenities

One of the remarkable aspects of the Goldener Hirsch is its abundant array of amenities. The resort offers an impressive selection of indoor and outdoor spaces where guests can relax with a refreshing drink and delightful house-made treats. A fully equipped fitness center and two spa treatment rooms ensure that guests are able to rejuvenate and unwind. The crown jewel of the resort is undoubtedly the rooftop pool and spa, which overlook a picturesque ski slope and lift, providing a breathtaking backdrop for relaxation. Moreover, the resort features a spacious ballroom capable of accommodating up to 150 individuals for weddings, corporate events and various resort activities. Additionally, the Goldener HIrsch offers an assortment of classes such as Bavarian pretzel making, yoga and even a tranquil sound bath experience before bedtime. Resort offerings change during the year, so always inquire about activity offerings during your intended stay. The Goldener Hirsch excels in providing an exceptional variety of amenities to enhance every guest's stay.

Located steps from the chairlifts, Goldener Hirsch is ski-in, ski-out at Deer Valley in winter. The resort has partnered with Ski Butler, a reputable ski rental and fitting service, to provide services on-site. All rooms come with their own private ski locker. The hotel is also situated next door to a couple of well stocked ski stores that can cover all your needs. Two days a week, the resort has a 30-minute base stretch for skiers. And Ski Butler carries your skis to the slopes for you each day. My family used Ski Butler and said they were friendly, on-time and provided good communication. Also of interest to skiers, Deer Valley will be operating Mayflower Mountain Resort which is located adjacent to Deer Valley. It is expected to have a soft opening in 2024-2025 and will eventually triple the amount of skiable terrain. Everyone is eagerly awaiting news about the availability of snowboarding runs.

Dining

The main restaurant is called Goldener Hirsch. It is open for dinner year-round but also for breakfast and lunch during ski season. Kitz Café is open for a quick breakfast or lunch year round. It has specialty coffees, house-made pastries, yogurt and avocado toast for breakfast and salads, sandwiches and soup for lunch. Additionally, the café features a self-serve hydration station with flat and sparkling water as well as chlorophyll and activated charcoal water. Antler Lounge is open throughout the day to gather and lounge as you wish with board games and live music in the evenings. Aprés Chalet is 2-4:30 p.m. on the outdoor restaurant patio when the weather allows and in the Antler Lounge all other times. Guests enjoy hand crafted cocktails and small plates. Swiss Alpine Smores are served on the pool deck daily from 5-6 p.m. Lastly, in-room dining is offered daily from 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. I really enjoyed the food offerings at the hotel during our stay. The food is obviously fresh and house-made.

Goldener Hirsch offers a daily shuttle service for guests on demand until 5 p.m. and every 30 minutes in the evening by reservation. I was here during a non-holiday week, and I had no trouble securing the shuttle service as needed several times a day. If you like to snowboard or just want to ski another mountain, Park City Mountain is only ten minutes by shuttle. Guests also use the shuttle for dining and shopping excursions which are also about ten minutes away.

Need to Know

I recommend Goldener Hirsch as an exceptional boutique hotel throughout the year, offering an outstanding experience with amenities that rival those of larger hotels. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventures in the winter or summer, this remarkable destination offers a multitude of options. The resort is a perfect getaway for families, couples, groups and even weddings. Reach out and allow me to curate your ideal Park City vacation experience.
