This trip was centered around exploring the literary legacy of John Steinbeck, one of America’s most iconic writers and one of my favorites. Instead of shacking up in Steinbeck's hometown of Salinas, we opted for a seaside stay in Monterey. While the sardine-packing industry of Cannery Row is long gone — replaced by farm-to-table restaurants, a Ghirardelli shop and opulent waterfront hotels — the city pays tribute to Steinbeck and his novel of the same name.

Old Fisherman's Wharf

We began with a leisurely walk along Cannery Row, reading plaques and peeking into buildings that inspired scenes from the novel. It's difficult to imagine rows of steel-walled fish tinneries where now stands a Starbucks and gift shop. The area memorializes Steinbeck and friends well — statues, banners and plaques adorn the streets.

We then made our way to the National Steinbeck Center in nearby Salinas — a must-visit for anyone even mildly interested in his work. The exhibits were engaging and thoughtful, weaving together his life story, literary achievements and humanitarian values.

One of the highlights of the weekend was lunch at The Steinbeck House, Steinbeck’s childhood home, which now operates as a charming restaurant and museum. Run entirely by passionate volunteers, this spot radiates warmth and reverence. The food was comforting and the conversation even better — don’t skip the downstairs gift shop, which is full of thoughtful literary souvenirs and historical tidbits.

Outside of the literary landmarks, Monterey’s natural beauty is just as compelling. From coastal walks along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail to seal spotting at Lovers Point Park, the area is perfect for reflection and relaxed exploration. If you have time, a drive down to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve or along the scenic 17-Mile Drive adds even more dimension to a well-rounded weekend.

Monterey is picturesque, even in the fog and gloom

Need to know

The Steinbeck House is typically open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch. Reservations are strongly recommended. It’s staffed entirely by friendly and knowledgeable volunteers, and the cozy gift shop downstairs is worth a visit on its own.

The National Steinbeck Center in Salinas is about a 25-minute drive from Monterey. Plan for one to two hours to fully explore the exhibits.

Mornings in Monterey can be foggy and chilly — bring layers if you’re starting early.

Steinbeck fans might enjoy checking local schedules for docent-led tours of the Pacific Biological Laboratories, where Ed Ricketts lived and worked.

For a quiet literary moment, take a drive to Carmel and browse the cozy shelves at River House Books.

The Monterey Bay Coastal Trail is perfect for walking off lunch with ocean views and interpretive signs about the area’s natural and human history.
