Curator’s statement
If there’s one place on earth that truly captures the meaning of “luxury meets nature,” it’s the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Fiji. It’s a destination that somehow blends five-star comfort, deep ocean discovery, rainforest adventure, and the warm, loving spirit of Fijian culture in a way that feels almost otherworldly. Getting there is part of the fun. It’s just a 10-hour nonstop flight from LA—and yes, you technically land in the future thanks to the International Date Line. But once you arrive, the transition is seamless. Time slows down, the air gets softer, and suddenly you’re surrounded by turquoise water and people greeting you with a genuine “Bula!” that feels like a hug.

Fiji is one of those rare destinations that feels both wildly remote and instantly comforting. The moment you land, you’re greeted with the warmth of Fijian culture—genuine hospitality, a slower pace, and a deep connection to the land and ocean. My time at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Savusavu perfectly captured this blend of barefoot luxury and immersive nature. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s a destination built around discovery, well-being, and meaningful connection.

The resort has an adults-only pool and restaurant, with a space for children out of view.
The resort sits on a secluded stretch of coastline, surrounded by calm turquoise waters and lush rainforest. What sets it apart is the way it brings the environment into every part of the experience. One day I was kayaking through mangroves and snorkeling over vibrant reefs; the next I was deep in the rainforest harvesting fresh ginger and learning about the island’s incredible biodiversity. Jean-Michel Cousteau’s legacy runs through the property, with a strong emphasis on marine conservation and education—something you really feel when you’re exploring the underwater world steps from your bure.

All water sport equipment is available and included, so you can snorkel, kayak, or sail any time you want.

Grounds are stunning with local fruits and garden spaces. You will feel like you stepped into your own tropical oasis.
Accommodations are spacious, private, and beautifully understated, with options ranging from garden-view bures to one- and two-bedroom oceanfront villas. The food is another highlight: three meals a day plus snacks are included, all focused on fresh local produce and Fijian flavors. It struck the perfect balance between luxury and ease—I never felt like I had to plan anything, yet every day felt rich with experiences.

Accommodations range from one bedroom with additional bedding options for children (of all ages) to two-bedroom villas.

A healthy five-star menu is included in your stay and changes daily (fresh catch and vegetarian options as well).
This is an ideal destination for couples looking for a restorative, meaningful escape, as well as families who want a luxury resort that genuinely caters to children. The Bula Club is exceptional—children are paired with their own “Bula Buddy,” allowing parents to truly relax while kids have the adventure of a lifetime. Whether you’re seeking ocean adventure, cultural immersion, or a quiet place to reset, the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort offers a uniquely transformative kind of travel that stays with you long after you leave.

Water sports, snorkeling, and scuba are all available at any moment's notice.
Need to know
Where I stayed
The resort sits on a secluded point in Savusavu, and every accommodation—from the garden bures to the spacious one- and two-bedroom oceanfront bures—has its own character. Mine was incredibly private, full of natural light, and designed with the kind of simple luxury that makes you instantly relax. You fall asleep to waves and wake up each morning to the most surreal shades of blue.
What I did
This was a trip where every day brought something extraordinary.
Rainforest exploration: Trekking deep into the greenery, learning about local plants (including the wild ginger I actually harvested myself—the ultimate detox ingredient).
Ocean activities: Snorkeling above vibrant reefs, kayaking through the mangroves, and learning about the resort’s marine conservation work inspired by Jean-Michel Cousteau’s legacy.
Slow moments: Reading by the water, long oceanfront lunches, fresh tropical fruit, and the kind of quiet that resets your entire nervous system.
Three meals a day—plus snacks—were included, and every dish was fresh, local, and full of flavor. Beverages are extra, but the cocktails were worth it.
Why Fiji worked its way into my heart
It’s the combination of everything—the people, the ocean, the culture, the pace. Fiji isn’t just a place you visit. It’s a place that slows you down, opens you up, and reminds you what it feels like to fully breathe again.
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort manages to feel both deeply grounding and beautifully indulgent. It’s truly the perfect blend of luxury and nature—and easily one of the most meaningful travel experiences I’ve had.
