Curator’s statement
Antarctica was one of the most unforgettable travel experiences of my life and truly unlike anywhere else on Earth. As the only continent without a permanent human population, it feels untouched, raw, and impossibly beautiful. From the moment we were picked up in Buenos Aires to the final disembarkation back in Argentina, every detail was handled with exceptional care and white-glove service. This is not a traditional cruise—it is a true expedition into one of the planet’s last great wildernesses. Watching whales breach beside the ship, seeing penguins dart through the icy water, and witnessing towering glaciers in complete silence felt almost surreal. Antarctica is humbling, emotional, and magical in every possible way.

Antarctica with HX Expeditions was one of the most transformative travel experiences I have ever had and completely redefined my understanding of expedition cruising. Unlike a traditional cruise focused on entertainment and port calls, every aspect of this journey was centered around exploration, education, and meaningful engagement with one of the most remote and pristine environments on Earth. Daily itineraries were intentionally flexible, allowing the expedition team to maximize wildlife encounters, landing opportunities, and zodiac excursions based on weather and sea conditions.
What impressed me most was the intimacy of the experience. Traveling on a purpose-built expedition vessel allowed for frequent zodiac operations and landings, creating opportunities to experience Antarctica up close rather than simply viewing it from the ship. Highlights included watching humpback whales surface beside our zodiac, observing penguin colonies in their natural habitat, spotting seals resting on floating ice, and navigating through fields of towering icebergs. These moments felt immersive and personal, offering a level of connection to the destination that larger ships simply cannot replicate.

HX Expeditions also excels at blending adventure with comfort. The onboard experience was elevated by an exceptional expedition team comprised of scientists, naturalists, and historians whose lectures and presentations added tremendous depth to the journey. I left with a greater appreciation not only for Antarctica's extraordinary wildlife and landscapes, but also for its environmental significance, conservation efforts, and the remarkable history of polar exploration. This educational component is a defining feature of the HX experience and one of the reasons I would confidently recommend the brand to intellectually curious travelers.

From a travel advisor perspective, this firsthand experience reinforced how important it is to match clients with the right Antarctica product. Factors such as ship size, cabin selection, activity level, and expedition style can significantly influence the overall experience. Antarctica is often perceived as an inaccessible destination, but I found it to be well suited for a wide range of travelers, including active retirees, solo travelers, multi-generational families, luxury adventure seekers, and clients celebrating milestone occasions. Proper preparation for the Drake Passage, packing requirements, and expedition expectations can make a substantial difference, and having experienced the journey myself allows me to better guide clients through those decisions.
For clients planning an Antarctic expedition, I strongly recommend adding time in Buenos Aires before or after the voyage. The city's sophisticated hotel scene, vibrant culinary culture, and rich history provide a wonderful contrast to the stark beauty of Antarctica and create a more complete South American travel experience. Together, Buenos Aires and Antarctica deliver an unforgettable combination of urban energy, cultural immersion, and once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Need to know
Antarctica is far more accessible than many travelers realize, but proper preparation is essential to fully enjoy the experience. Layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, and quality camera equipment can significantly enhance comfort and allow travelers to make the most of every landing and wildlife encounter. Because most voyages cross the Drake Passage, I also recommend bringing motion sickness remedies, even for travelers who do not typically experience seasickness. Weather and sea conditions ultimately dictate daily operations, so flexibility and an adventurous mindset are important parts of the expedition experience.
This destination is particularly well-suited for milestone celebrations, including birthdays, anniversaries, and retirement trips, as well as travelers seeking a truly transformative journey. Photography enthusiasts should plan for extensive shooting opportunities by bringing extra batteries and memory cards.
Having experienced Antarctica firsthand, I can also help clients navigate important planning decisions such as the best time to travel, selecting the right cabin category, understanding activity levels, coordinating flights through Buenos Aires, and comparing expedition operators to find the best fit for their travel style and expectations.
