Curator’s statement
I’d dreamed of the Maldives for decades, and when I finally arrived at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, it was every bit as magical as I imagined. Warm welcomes, genuine hospitality, and a natural, understated beauty define the experience. Unlike the sprawling, glitzy resorts of the region, Vabbinfaru offers something quieter: a barefoot, peaceful kind of luxury.

The experience
The sense of escape begins the moment you step onto the speedboat that whisks you from Malé to the resort’s private island. In just 25 minutes, I was walking barefoot on soft white sand, greeted by the rhythmic beat of a drum and a smiling lineup of team members. It felt like my own White Lotus moment. After the barefoot welcome ritual, check-in was seamless, and I was soon being guided to my villa.

The villas and that magical outdoor shower
In late 2024, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru completed a renovation to mark its 30th anniversary, refreshing all 48 villas. Guests can choose between oceanview villas tucked into the treeline for privacy, or beachfront villas opening directly onto the sand. Each combines natural woods, thatched roofs, and handwoven textiles with modern comforts like private plunge pools, open-air bathrooms, and direct beach access.
The true indulgence, however, is the outdoor shower. Imagine warm water cascading over you as sunlight filters through lush florals, the air scented with hibiscus and Banyan Tree’s signature spa collection of shower gels and lotions, and the quiet rustle of palms all around. It captures the essence of barefoot luxury. It’s simple, sensory, and restorative.

Dining and design highlights
The resort’s three restaurants and one bar were recently redesigned with equal focus on cuisine, architecture, and sustainability. Guests can choose a half-board plan (breakfast and dinner) or full-board (all three meals).
Madi Hiyaa: An architectural statement perched above the lagoon, serving sushi and yakitori. Its design earned the Prix Versailles 2024 for global excellence in architecture and dining.
Saffron: The signature Thai restaurant, recognized by the Michelin Guide Thailand 2024, reinterprets heritage recipes with contemporary finesse.
Sangu Garden: Casual by day, transforming on select nights with themed buffets or curated dinners.
Naiboli Bar: Beachfront, laid-back, and timeless—the place for golden-hour cocktails or an afternoon lost in a book.

Things to do (or not)
Snorkeling and diving: The aquatic center is the heartbeat of the property, offering guided snorkeling, night fishing, dolphin cruises, and access to Dhawa Ihuru’s reef and shipwreck dives.
Kayaking and paddleboarding: Options for those who prefer to stay above the water, with sailing available as well.
Spa and wellbeing: A world-class Banyan Tree spa complemented by rotating wellness rituals, including breathwork and sound baths.
Infinity pool: A saltwater pool tucked behind Madi Hiyaa that blurs the line between pool and ocean. Perfect for reading, sushi, or a cocktail at sunset.
Twin Island experience: Just a 10-minute boat ride connects guests to sister property, Dhawa Ihuru, for expanded dining and diving.
Our Marine Lab: A testament to Banyan Tree’s conservation leadership featuring local initiatives and workshops, and immersive activities like coral planting and reef cleaning for guests.

The essence of quiet luxury
Vabbinfaru is a counterpoint to the mega-resorts of the Maldives. With just 48 villas, the island feels intimate and authentic. Pathways glow with solar light. Handmade mosquito nets and sarong-inspired textiles are crafted by local artisans. Each design choice reflects purposeful luxury paired with an authentic sense of Maldivian heritage.
The service follows suit. It’s warm, genuine, and unobtrusive. It’s not about showy gestures but about small, thoughtful moments—knowing your name, anticipating your needs, and offering smiles that feel real.

Who it’s for
This is a sanctuary for romantics, wellness seekers, and solo travelers who crave simplicity over spectacle. Here, you don’t just visit the Maldives—you feel them. Its proximity to Malé makes it a natural add-on to journeys through Sri Lanka, Dubai, or Abu Dhabi—yet once here, the outside world feels blissfully distant.
Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru is a place where nature and Maldivian customs take the lead, and where every detail whispers instead of shouts. It’s luxury without noise, and it feels fantastic.
