Jungle Chic in Ubud: A Stay at Viceroy Bali
Curator’s statement

Viceroy Bali is a stunning blend of jungle serenity and five-star sophistication, perched above the lush Valley of the Kings just minutes from Ubud. My stay was both indulgent and grounding, with private pool villas, intuitive service, and some of the best dining in Bali. It’s the kind of place where time slows down—and luxury feels personal, not performative. This report captures what makes Viceroy a standout in Bali’s competitive high-end landscape.

There’s luxury, and then there’s Viceroy Bali—a place so exquisitely peaceful, it feels almost sacred. Perched on a jungle ridge just minutes from Ubud, the resort is a world apart, suspended above a lush river valley with views that seem straight from a movie set.

Why I recommend it

From the moment I was welcomed with a cold towel and fresh coconut water, I could feel the resort’s calm wrap around me like a warm blanket. My Pool Villa was the perfect sanctuary—indoor-outdoor living with a thatched roof, a marble bathroom the size of a small apartment, and a private infinity pool that looked out over dense jungle. I lost track of time watching the sun cut through the morning mist, the sounds of the river and birdsong below.

What truly impressed me, though, was how seamlessly the Viceroy blends ultra-refined service with Balinese warmth. The staff seemed to appear before I even knew I needed something—always gracious, never intrusive.

Insider tips

  • Go for the Terrace or Deluxe Terrace Villas for maximum views and privacy. The newer Pool Suites are beautiful, but I loved the traditional Balinese details in the originals.

  • Dinner at Apéritif is a true event—a fine-dining journey in an opulent mansion. Go for the full tasting menu with wine pairing. For something casual, the nasi goreng at Cascades is best enjoyed poolside with a local Bintang beer.

  • Ask the concierge to arrange a sunrise trek at Mount Batur. Returning to your villa for a plunge and a floating breakfast after that hike? Unbeatable.

  • The Akoya Spa, newly added, offers valley views from the treatment rooms and one of the most relaxing massages I’ve ever had—paired with the scent of frangipani and lemongrass.

Who it’s perfect for

Ideal for honeymooners, couples celebrating something special, or solo travelers on a soul-fueled journey. It’s romantic, restorative, and deeply peaceful. Ubud is just 10 minutes away, but you might never leave the resort—and that’s perfectly fine.

Need to know

Viceroy is located about 10 minutes from central Ubud, with complimentary shuttle service making it easy to explore town without the noise of staying in it. The property is built on a hillside, so while buggies are available, travelers with mobility concerns should request a villa close to the main facilities. Bali’s dry season (May to September) is ideal for visiting, especially for outdoor dining and jungle views. Be sure to pack resort wear, insect repellent, and something dressy if you’re planning dinner at Apéritif.
