We began our three-day escape with a leisurely, bountiful brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff in Johannesburg, a beautiful send-off with sweeping city views before heading into the bush. From there, a private car transfer whisked us away on a comfortable three-hour journey to Pilanesberg National Park, one of South Africa’s most accessible safari destinations. Pilanesberg’s appeal lies in its location as it’s malaria-free, just a short drive from Johannesburg, and home to the Big Five, cheetahs, wild dogs, and over 350 species of birds. For those who want the full safari experience without extra internal flights, this reserve is an ideal choice.

Brunch at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff
Our home for two nights was Tambuti Lodge, a boutique five-star retreat tucked inside the private Black Rhino Reserve. With just a handful of suites, this adults-only property feels exclusive, personal, and wonderfully relaxing. The accommodations blend luxury and comfort effortlessly—think private decks that open to the bush, deep soaking tubs, and outdoor showers. One of the most thoughtful perks is the daily included laundry service; I’d leave a bundle of clothes in the morning and return to find them spotless and neatly folded by the afternoon. Housekeeping worked with such stealth that we never once saw them, yet our suite remained immaculate throughout our stay.

Dining at Tambuti is another highlight. Meals can be enjoyed communally for a social, lodge-style atmosphere or privately for something more intimate. Each dish incorporates South African flavors and fresh local ingredients, elevated with fine dining flair. Between meals and twice-daily game drives, we found time to unwind at the pool and linger over afternoon teas. On evening drives, we paused for sundowners in the bush—gin and tonics in hand, watching the sun sink behind the hills while elephants grazed in the distance. During our stay, sightings included four adolescent lions casually strolling past our vehicle, elephants congregating at a watering hole, and even the rare thrill of spotting a black rhino.

The service at Tambuti is exceptional and personal without being intrusive. On our last night, the staff surprised us with a private dinner on our patio followed by a bubble bath drawn in our suite, a gesture that made us feel truly cared for. This level of attention, combined with the incredible wildlife and serene setting, made it hard to leave. As our private transfer carried us back toward Johannesburg, I found myself already planning a return.

I’d recommend Tambuti Lodge to couples, honeymooners, or anyone looking for an intimate, luxurious safari that balances adventure with comfort. For travelers who want to maximize time on safari without long flights or complicated logistics, Pilanesberg and Tambuti Lodge are an unforgettable combination.

Need to know
What to pack: Bring layers as mornings and evenings on game drives can be quite chilly, while midday heats up quickly. A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essentials, as well as a good pair of binoculars. The lodge provides blankets on drives and insect repellent. Daily laundry service is included, so you can pack lighter than you might expect.
Daily routine: Expect two game drives per day (early morning and late afternoon). In between, there’s time to nap, lounge by the pool, or enjoy afternoon tea.
Malaria-free zone: Pilanesberg is malaria-free, which makes it a great choice for anyone who prefers not to take malaria prophylaxis.
