After sailing on several Viking River Cruises throughout Europe, I experienced nothing short of exceptional service when it came to accommodating my gluten-free diet. From the moment I stepped aboard, I felt confident that my health and safety were a priority.

Whether it was breakfast, lunch, dinner, or one of the ship's themed dining experiences, I was never limited to a single "safe" option. Instead, I was offered a wide variety of thoughtfully prepared gluten-free dishes, allowing me to enjoy every meal alongside everyone else. Rather than making my food allergy feel like an inconvenience, the culinary team treated it as something they expertly manage every day. Their knowledge, attention to detail, and genuine care made me feel included in every dining experience—a level of hospitality that truly set Viking apart.

My experience eating gluten-free aboard Viking River Cruises

As someone with celiac disease, one of my biggest concerns whenever I travel is whether I'll be able to dine safely without feeling like a burden. After sailing on several Viking River Cruises throughout Europe, I can confidently say that Viking provides one of the best gluten-free dining experiences I've encountered.

The first step is simple but important: make sure Viking knows about your gluten allergy or celiac disease before you board. Once on board, the maître d' will actually seek you out before your very first meal (yes, really!) to introduce themselves, explain the dining process, and ensure they understand your dietary needs.

Gluten-free schnitzel: yes, the regional favorites aboard Viking River can be prepared gluten free!

Breakfast

Breakfast offers plenty of choices. You can order from the regular breakfast menu or enjoy the buffet, which includes made-to-order eggs prepared separately upon request. Even better, menu favorites like **French toast and pancakes can be made gluten-free** with advance notice. On several sailings, I was also pleasantly surprised to find gluten-free croissants available in the morning.

Each morning, the maître d' greeted me with written copies of the lunch and dinner menus, allowing me to select my meals well in advance. What impressed me most was that very few menu items were simply crossed off. Instead, the culinary team worked incredibly hard to modify dishes whenever possible. While a few items couldn't be adapted safely, their first response was always, "Let's see what we can do," rather than "No."

Lunch & dinner

At every lunch and dinner, the dining staff remembered my dietary needs without being reminded. When my meal arrived, the server consistently confirmed that it had been prepared gluten-free, providing an extra layer of reassurance that was greatly appreciated.

One small improvement

I'd love to see a discreet flag or marker on gluten-free plates. However, after speaking with one of the chefs, I understood why they don't currently use one. He explained that many of Viking's soups, sauces, and other menu items are naturally prepared without gluten, and gluten-containing ingredients are typically limited to items that are obviously breaded or made with wheat. Because of this, there is very little opportunity for plates to be confused in the kitchen.

Desserts

Dessert is often where gluten-free travelers are left with fruit while everyone else enjoys something special. That was not my experience on Viking. The pastry team consistently provided delicious gluten-free dessert options, making me feel included in every meal rather than like an afterthought.

One area for improvement

If there's one area where Viking could improve, it would be the complimentary coffee and snack station available throughout the day. While it is regularly stocked with muffins, cookies, and other baked treats, I never found a gluten-free alternative available. Offering even one packaged gluten-free snack or cookie would make this popular gathering spot much more inclusive for guests with celiac disease or gluten allergies.

Overall

Viking doesn't simply accommodate gluten-free travelers—they make you feel genuinely welcome. From the maître d' personally introducing themselves before your first meal to the chefs' willingness to adapt dishes and the dining staff's consistent attention to detail, I never felt like my celiac disease was an inconvenience. Instead, I felt cared for, included, and able to enjoy every dining experience alongside everyone else. For anyone with celiac disease or a gluten allergy considering a Viking River Cruise, that peace of mind is truly invaluable.
