Sailing, South Beach & Sportfishing: An Unforgettable Riviera Maya Cruise
Curator’s statement

There’s something incredibly rewarding about planning your own trip as a travel advisor—especially when everything comes together better than expected. For this journey, my wife and I kicked off with a VIP hotel experience in South Beach before setting sail on a Virgin Voyages cruise to Cozumel and Bimini. We balanced laid-back luxury with adventurous moments, including a surprise 51-inch kingfish in Cozumel. It’s a perfect blend of recharge and thrill, and a reminder that every trip has the potential to exceed expectations.

We started our trip in style at the Hilton Bentley Miami South Beach, where I used my Fora Advisor status to secure VIP treatment for our stay. The property is ideally located on the quieter southern tip of South Beach, and upon arrival, we were upgraded to a spacious one-bedroom partial ocean-view suite. The room featured a private balcony, a full kitchen, a modern bathroom, and a bright, elegant design—perfect for relaxing after a travel day.

Waiting in our suite was a welcome amenity of champagne and snacks, which we enjoyed while sitting on the balcony, taking in the Miami sun and beach energy. Thanks to my Hilton Aspire Credit Card, we also had a resort credit that we used for in-room dining—indulging in a delicious dinner that evening and a slow, quiet breakfast the next morning. This made the hotel feel like a true retreat before boarding day.

A lovely surprise was how close the hotel is to South Pointe Park and Pier. After checking in, we took a stroll down the beach to the park and watched the cruise ships sail out—imagining that we’d be on one ourselves the very next day. It added to the excitement and gave us a peaceful moment to ease into vacation mode.

The next day, we took a short ride to Port Miami, arriving early and boarding the Valiant Lady ahead of schedule. Virgin Voyages offers a completely modern cruise experience: no buffets, no kids, no rigid schedules—just curated restaurants, gorgeous design, and a fun-yet-sophisticated vibe. Dining highlights included The Wake and Extra Virgin, but our favorite place to unwind was The Dock House, where the Garden Eastside cocktail (cucumber & mint vodka, honey, lime) became our signature drink of the trip.

Our itinerary included Cozumel and Bimini, two very different but equally rewarding destinations. In Cozumel, we booked an afternoon with Abrimar II Fishing Charters and caught a 51-inch kingfish—a literal once-in-a-lifetime trophy catch. The experience was both thrilling and beautifully scenic. Bimini offered a more relaxing contrast, with white sand beaches and swimmable turquoise waters perfect for soaking up the sun and ocean vibes.

Back on board, we enjoyed a mix of entertainment, spa time, and restful evenings after active days in port. Virgin Voyages nails the balance between elevated and playful—ideal for couples who want something more grown-up but still full of fun. From chic restaurants to dynamic nightlife, the ship offers something for every mood and travel style.

Need to know

  • Use your Fora Advisor perks! VIP treatment at Hilton Bentley made all the difference. Room upgrades and welcome amenities help set the tone for the entire trip.

  • Book using a Hilton Honors card like the Aspire to take advantage of resort credits—perfect for a relaxing room service experience.

  • Arrive a day early in Miami to explore South Pointe Park, dine well, and ease into cruise mode.

  • Virgin Voyages cruises include Wi-Fi, gratuities, and all restaurants—it feels simple and liberating compared to most traditional cruise lines.

  • In Cozumel, book Abrimar II Fishing Charters for an unforgettable on-the-water experience—Mario and his team are professional, passionate, and local experts.

  • Don’t miss Scarlet Night aboard the Valiant Lady—it’s an adults-only theme night that turns the ship into a floating party (in a good way).
