Milestone Wedding Anniversary in São Miguel, Azores
Curator’s statement

São Miguel is one of those rare destinations that still feels like a well-kept secret—a place where the rest of the world hasn’t quite caught up yet, and that’s precisely what makes it so special. The landscapes are nothing short of breathtaking, from the impossibly green calderas and steaming volcanic lakes to cascading waterfalls and dramatic coastal cliffs that seem almost too beautiful to be real. What truly sets this island apart, though, is how effortlessly it blends the thrill of adventure—hiking trails, rich flora and fauna, and sweeping panoramic views—with the kind of unhurried, soul-restoring pace of life that is increasingly hard to find. And then there is the food: exceptional steaks, the freshest seafood imaginable, and local wines that deserve far more attention than they get—all of it a reminder that São Miguel doesn’t just capture your eye, it captures all of your senses.

Where to stay

São Miguel was the perfect choice for our tenth wedding anniversary—a destination that promised exactly the blend of adventure and relaxation we were craving, and then delivered far beyond our expectations. We traveled in October, during the island’s shoulder season, and it was an inspired decision. The crowds were minimal, the roads were uncongested, and the island felt genuinely ours to explore. If you’re considering São Miguel and have flexibility with timing, I can’t recommend the fall season enough.

For our six nights, we made the deliberate choice to split our stay between two very different bases—three nights in Ponta Delgada and three nights in Furnas—and that decision truly shaped the richness of our experience.

Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada served as an ideal home base for the first half of our trip. We stayed at the Octant Ponta Delgada, a property I would recommend without hesitation. It is just a ten-minute walk from the city center and offers a complimentary breakfast that genuinely rivals anything you’d find at a high-end café. We arrived off a red-eye flight at around 6 a.m., and the staff—without missing a beat—offered us a private event space with comfortable couches so we could rest until our room was ready. That gesture set the tone for the entire stay.

Renting a car was another decision I’d strongly encourage for any client visiting the island. The roads are narrow and winding, but navigating them is far easier than it sounds, and the freedom to explore on your own schedule is truly invaluable.

From Ponta Delgada, we packed our days with a wonderful mix of culture and adventure. On our very first day, we joined a food tour—and I can’t recommend this highly enough as a trip-opener. It introduced us to the local culinary identity and the dishes the island is known for, so that every meal we ordered afterward felt informed and intentional rather than guesswork. We also spent a full day simply wandering the city: the farmers market, the historic churches, the cobblestone streets.

Beyond the city, we drove north for a quad bike tour along the coast all the way to Sete Cidades, riding along the rim of a volcano with cows grazing on either side of us—genuinely one of the most exhilarating things I’ve done in years. We also made our way to the west coast to spend an afternoon at the Mosteiros Natural Swimming Pools, a breathtaking spot carved by volcanic rock where a charming little bar nearby lets you linger with a drink and watch the sunset.

And not to be missed: a whale-watching tour out of Ponta Delgada. While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, we were treated to dolphins following our boat and a rare sighting of Minke whales, which our guide said are spotted only infrequently. An unforgettable afternoon on the water.

Furnas

The drive from Ponta Delgada to Furnas marked one of the most striking transitions of the trip—from a vibrant, walkable city to what I can only describe as a living fairytale.

We stayed at Terra Nostra, and the property is something truly special. The gardens alone are worth the visit, but the crown jewel is access to the natural thermal hot springs after the park closes to the public each evening. As hotel guests, we were handed plush robes, stepped outside, and slipped into steaming, mineral-rich waters under a canopy of stars. It is the kind of memory that stays with you.

During the days in Furnas, we hiked at Grena Park—a moderately challenging trail that rewards you at the summit with sweeping views, with several waterfall pools along the way where you can cool off and catch your breath. We also strolled around Furnas Lake, peaceful and stunning in equal measure.

No visit to Furnas would be complete without seeing the volcanic geysers and, more importantly, sitting down to a bowl of cozido das Furnas—a hearty stew of meat, sausage, and potatoes slow-cooked underground by volcanic heat. It’s simple, it’s rustic, and it’s one of those meals you eat more for the story than the Michelin stars—and that is entirely the point.

Takeaways

São Miguel is a destination I would confidently recommend to couples celebrating a milestone, adventurous travelers seeking something off the beaten path, foodies, nature lovers, and anyone who feels they’ve seen too much of the world’s most obvious destinations.

Splitting the stay between Ponta Delgada and Furnas is something I would build into every itinerary—it allows you to experience the island’s full spectrum, from its urban energy to its volcanic stillness. This island has a way of surprising you at every turn, and that, above all else, is what will bring travelers back.
