Viking Ocean Cruises: Greek Odyssey
Curator’s statement

My first voyage on one of Viking’s ocean ships took me on an unforgettable journey aboard the Viking Star. Each day was thoughtfully crafted for my ultimate relaxation and adventure. Every stop at the enchanting Greek islands and the ancient wonders of Ephesus not only sparked my sense of adventure but also delighted my senses.

Where to stay

Why choose Viking, you may ask? Having sailed on numerous ‘small’ big ships in the past, I opted for Viking to deepen my understanding of ocean cruising. With a passenger capacity of around 930, which I consider a ‘small’ big ship, I knew I would enjoy the spaciousness ideal for dining, theater events, and lounges—no need to rush to secure a seat, and this proved true on my Viking voyage.

Staff & service

The on-board staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. You’ll find a staff member nearby at all times, ready to assist with any needs you may have. Embarkation was seamless and efficient—there was no need to identify my luggage at the terminal. The waitstaff is plentiful, ensuring that meals are served promptly and your wine glass is frequently refilled.

Excursions

Viking offers a variety of exciting excursions to choose from, including complimentary included excursions. Once again, the organization is impressive: loading and unloading buses operate like clockwork.

Accommodation

All staterooms have a veranda regardless of location. The rooms are generously spacious, featuring ample closet space and drawers for all your belongings. Plus, you’ll find a fridge stocked with complimentary soft drinks, diet drinks, tonic water, almonds, and even delightful chocolates!

Food & drink

There are two specialty restaurants included in the fare: Chef’s Table and Manfreddi’s. Chef’s Table offers a multi-course dinner with curated wine pairings, and the menu changes every few days. Manfreddi’s is an Italian restaurant featuring an extensive, thoughtfully crafted menu.

When comparing ocean cruise lines, pay attention to what is included and what is not included. Viking offers red or white wine at lunch and dinnertime. Cocktails and wine at any other time are an additional charge. For instance, an old-fashioned is $11. There is a Silver Spirits beverage package you can purchase for $27 per day, per person, with both in a stateroom required to purchase.

In port

I selected the 11-day Greek Odyssey itinerary because I had never visited Athens before, and I knew I could easily arrange a few pre-cruise nights in the city through Viking. The Athens Marriott was one of the hotels used by Viking, but if you want a centrally located hotel, book at the Hotel Grande Bretagne (which is covered in my Athens trip report). My visit to Souda Bay in Crete introduced me to another side of the island, distinct from the area I had explored on my previous trip.

Need to know

Gratuities are not included and will be charged to your onboard account. Viking recommends $17–$20 per day, per person, but you may determine your own amount and even leave additional cash in an envelope for your exceptionally attentive staff.

One of my favorite aspects of Viking Ocean ships is the intentional design of the seating, particularly in the theater. Instead of traditional rows of fixed theater chairs, you’ll find individual swivel chairs with small cocktail tables in between, leather sofas, and leather chairs. This same inviting seating concept carries throughout the public spaces onboard. It’s both comfortable and incredibly well-conceived.
