We recently stayed at Atelier in Playa Mujeres to celebrate my 40th birthday. This was our first trip without our kids in 10 years, so this vacation was incredibly special to us.
First, the property itself is absolutely stunning. The rooms, grounds, and overall design are truly beautiful, and everything feels modern, clean, and thoughtfully curated. The restaurants are also gorgeous, and overall, the food exceeded expectations for an all-inclusive resort. Our favorite restaurants were Mercado 19, Los Abrazos, Takeshi, and Cilento. The drinks were good, though not quite as impressive as the food. Our favorite drinks of the trip were at Bar de la Calle—they were by far the best!

Sipping a cocktail in the pool
The rooms themselves were nearly perfect—clean, spacious, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. However, the walls were surprisingly thin. We could clearly hear full conversations from the room next door, which at times took away from the otherwise relaxing atmosphere.
Service, for the most part, was excellent. Staff were friendly and attentive, and we had many great interactions throughout our stay. However, there were a couple of notable hiccups.

The biggest disappointment was around my birthday. My husband had arranged something special in advance and confirmed it twice, and we also mentioned my birthday when we booked the reservation, and at check-in. Unfortunately, nothing was done! There was no acknowledgment at all. For such a milestone celebration, this was really disappointing and felt like a big miss.
Another challenge was the restaurant reservation system. You can’t book dining until you arrive, and even then, you’re limited to reserving only three nights at a time. We arrived on a Monday, and my birthday was Wednesday, but all of the restaurants we had hoped for were already fully booked. It was frustrating, especially since we would have gladly planned ahead months in advance if that were an option.

We also found the poolside food options to be somewhat limited. While everything we tried was extremely tasty, there wasn’t a lot of variety, and we were a bit surprised by the lack of Mexican food options in that area. I was so excited to sit and eat chips and guac each day while sipping spicy margs, and there weren’t even chips on the pool menu!

Tacos from the taco stand- so delicious!
That said, one of the absolute highlights of our trip was the incredible taco cart set up around the lobby each day—it was hands down some of our favorite food at the resort and something we looked forward to daily.
Finally, Gabriel from the concierge truly saved the day. He went above and beyond—personally walking us to one of our top restaurant choices and getting us a table for my birthday. We were incredibly grateful for his effort and care.

The gorgeous beach
Overall, we had a great experience. The resort is beautiful, the food is very good, and much of the service is strong. However, between the difficulty with reservations, the noise from neighboring rooms, the limited poolside food variety, and the complete miss on a milestone birthday celebration, I’m not sure we would return. That said, I would still happily recommend it to clients, as many of them would absolutely love the property regardless of my experience.
Need to know
While Atelier is an adults-only property, it permits guests ages 16 and older. During our stay, there were a noticeable number of high-school-aged guests on spring break, which was unexpected for us. We also found it necessary to reserve poolside seating early in the day, typically leaving our books and towels at our chairs before going to breakfast.
