Curator’s statement
My recent stay at Alila Ubud by Hyatt was a return to the peaceful nourishment I crave when Ubud’s center becomes too crowded and full of motion. Each year, I spend extended time in Bali immersing myself in the yoga havens of Alchemy and Yoga Barn, but it’s here—perched above the Ayung River valley—where I truly exhale. The hush of the jungle, the rhythm of my personal early-morning yoga and meditation practice beside the infinity pool, and the luxury of doing nothing remind me why this part of the island will always feel like a sacred pause. I reconnect with what originally drew me to Bali—simplicity, balance, and the beauty of slowing down.

From the moment my taxi turned into the driveway beneath Alila Ubud’s centuries-old tree, I knew I was somewhere special. A staff member greeted me by name before I even stepped out of the car—a small but meaningful gesture that set the tone for the stay. As I was escorted through lush pathways to my room, the shift in energy was immediate: the sounds of the jungle replaced the traffic of central Ubud, and I could feel my whole body exhale.

Poolside reflections
My room was a serene retreat, designed to blur the line between indoors and out. The highlight was the open-air bathroom—with its rain shower and deep soaking tub surrounded by greenery—that made even a quick rinse feel like a ritual. Mornings began with walks through nearby rice terraces and banana groves, followed by an indulgent breakfast buffet featuring fresh tropical fruit, cold-pressed juices, and a thoughtful mix of Western and Indonesian favorites.

Warm, inviting tones

Healthy breakfast
Days at Alila unfold at an unhurried pace. I recommend lunch at the poolside café, which offers light, Western-style classics and a relaxed atmosphere for lingering between swims. As the sun sets, the upstairs dining room transforms into a more elegant experience, with a buffet showcasing inventive Indonesian cuisine that feels both elevated and authentic. The service throughout the property balances warmth and professionalism—intuitive yet never intrusive.

Who it’s for: Alila Ubud is ideal for travelers seeking immersion in tropical nature and tranquility rather than nightlife or shopping. It’s perfect for couples, solo travelers, and anyone craving a few days of quiet luxury away from central Ubud’s bustle. You’ll want to plan to dine mostly on site—the property is about a 30-minute drive from town—and embrace the slower rhythm of jungle life. Be sure to enjoy the infinity pool overlooking the valley, soak in your outdoor bathtub, and keep your patio doors closed when fruit is around… the resident monkeys are confident little food critics.

Need to know
The jungle setting is one of Alila Ubud’s greatest charms—and that includes the resident monkeys, who are as confident as they are curious. Within minutes of my arrival, one casually helped itself to the breadsticks from my welcome tray as I was checking in—a good reminder to keep all snacks (and fruit) inside your room.
The resort offers a rotating schedule of complimentary activities throughout the week, such as guided rice field walks, yoga sessions, and traditional crafts or cooking experiences. These small group offerings are a lovely way to connect with the surrounding community and landscape without ever leaving the property.
For travelers booking through a Hyatt Privé travel advisor like myself, Alila Ubud is one of the participating Hyatt Privé properties, which means additional benefits: daily complimentary breakfast, a property credit (often usable at the spa or restaurants), room upgrades, and, in some cases, exclusive complimentary spa experiences or other personalized touches that make the stay even more special.
This is the kind of retreat that rewards slowing down—where you can simply be, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and the ease of thoughtful hospitality.
