El Valle de Antón has always been a special place for me. As a Panamanian, it is a cooler, greener escape from the city where I have spent days surrounded by nature, waterfalls, and open-air adventures since my childhood. This recently opened hotel has elevated the spirit of El Valle through thoughtful design, a strong wellness focus, delicious gastronomy while embracing it's gifted nature surroundings.

La Compañía del Valle is a Hyatt Unbound Collection property and the sister hotel to La Compañía Hotel and Villa Ana restaurant in Panama City’s Casco Antiguo. The hotel is a recent refurbishment of one of the very few large hotels that has ever existed in El Valle, thoughtfully reimagined as a wellness-focused retreat with friendly local service.
Guest room
With 72 rooms, the property feels intimate yet spacious. I love the rooms facing the gardens, waking up to lush greenery and the sounds of nature. For families planning to enjoy the pool, first-floor rooms with terraces that open directly onto the pool area are ideal. Couples or travelers seeking complete tranquility should opt for the hotel’s dedicated adults-only area, which includes 19 rooms designed specifically for rest, silence, and privacy.
Elysium spa infinity pool
The culinary offerings are one of the hotel’s strongest highlights. Breakfast is extensive, and guests can enjoy it in the stunning glass house dining area on the pond. Terra, the vegetarian restaurant, is fresh and creative, while Fuego, the steakhouse, offers excellent meat cuts along with a more intimate experience at its dedicated chef’s table. Tiempo, the lobby restaurant, serves international cuisine (I especially recommend the Asian- and Indian-inspired dishes, which are excellent). Viento, the rooftop bar, is ideal for sunset drinks and relaxed happy hours overlooking the property’s gardens and decorative statues.
All restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating areas.
Elysium spa
Wellness is at the core of La Compañía del Valle. The hotel is home to the largest and newest spa in Central America, Elysium, featuring a hammam, saunas, mud treatments, a saltwater pool, and an extensive treatment menu including wine and chocolate massages that are absolutely worth trying. After treatments, guests can relax at the spa’s rooftop infinity pool with light bites and drinks, or join classes in the dedicated yoga space.

While the property is primarily focused on wellness and nature, it can also host small-scale events. Indoor event spaces accommodate up to 80 guests, making it suitable for intimate retreats or celebrations rather than large conferences or social events, and ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for guests seeking rest and relaxation.

For those who enjoy staying active, the hotel offers a compact but well-equipped gym and an indoor pickleball court—though the surrounding nature often becomes the preferred workout.
El Valle de Antón
Beyond the hotel, El Valle itself is a key part of the experience. The town is small and community-driven, and La Compañía works closely with local guides and operators. Guests can arrange guided hikes such as La India Dormida, a moderate hike and one of the most beautiful in the area, which I highly recommend, as well as e-bike tours, horseback riding, ziplining, visits to the local market, and excursions to see the famous square trees, a rare natural phenomenon found only here and in very few places worldwide. One of my favorite experiences is a visit to Don Evelio’s farm, where guests can learn firsthand about traditional sugarcane production alongside his family.

El Valle de Antón is a haven for nature lovers—especially birdwatchers. In one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, home to over 1,000 bird species, wildlife encounters, from colorful birds to sloths, are part of everyday life.
Need to know
El Valle de Antón is located approximately two hours and 15 minutes from Panama City and is easily reached by car, or the hotel can arrange private transfers for those that prefer to relax on the way. El Valle sits within an inactive volcanic crater, giving it a unique climate that remains a few degrees cooler than Panama City year-round, making it an ideal escape from the heat.
This property and the destination is best suited for travelers seeking wellness, nature, and quiet luxury rather than nightlife or a fast-paced itinerary. While the town is small, there is a wide range of activities and experiences available, and working with the hotel concierge makes a big difference. I recommend at least a two- to three-night stay to fully enjoy the spa, dining, and surrounding nature without rushing.
