Curator’s statement
Secret Bay is the kind of property that redefines what a Caribbean escape can be. Perched high on a cliffside above the Caribbean Sea, this Relais & Châteaux resort is less a hotel and more a private jungle retreat—where the service is so anticipatory it borders on invisible, and the views from your villa are nothing short of breathtaking. Dominica itself is unlike any other island in the Caribbean: raw, lush, and unapologetically wild, and Secret Bay is the perfect lens through which to experience it. If you are ready for something genuinely extraordinary, this is the answer.

From the moment we landed, Secret Bay made clear that this would be a different kind of stay. A member of the team greeted us at the airport with refreshments—a small touch that immediately set the tone. Upon arriving at the resort, we were welcomed with chilled lemongrass juice and given a thorough tour of the grounds, winding through lush jungle paths to discover the infinity pool, open-air gym, restaurant, and various villa types nestled throughout the property. The Mapou Villa, where we stayed, sits at the highest vantage point on the property and is simply breathtaking—floor-to-ceiling glass walls, warm wood architecture, a private pool, and unobstructed views over the bay and mountains beyond. Walking in for the first time felt like stepping into a treehouse designed by someone with impeccable taste.

Welcome amenities

Villa
What truly sets Secret Bay apart is the caliber of its service, which manages to be both deeply attentive and completely unobtrusive. Our villa was already stocked with regional Dominican ingredients—local produce, eggs, spices, and provisions for in-villa cooking—and our bags had been unpacked and our clothes put away. A dedicated iPhone in the villa connects directly to the team, meaning you never have to dial a front desk or wait for someone to pick up; communication is instant and personal. After two nights of turndown service that left our villa looking as though we'd never been there—laundry done, clothes refolded, fresh towels, every surface immaculate—it became clear that the team at Secret Bay takes genuine pride in what they do.

Beach
The activities on offer strike the ideal balance between relaxation and adventure. One of the property's most unique features is its private funicular, which carries guests from the elevated resort down through the jungle to the beach—a genuinely fun and memorable detail that no other resort in the Caribbean can claim. From there, we kayaked to Secret Beach, a secluded cove accessible only by water, and spent time snorkeling in the clear Caribbean Sea before returning to the pool for a cocktail with the mountains as our backdrop. The open-air gym, wrapped entirely in tropical vegetation, is one of the most unique fitness spaces I've seen. Each evening, we watched the sunset from our villa terrace—the kind of sky that makes you put your phone down—before heading down to dinner, where the kitchen leans into local Dominican flavors with real skill. The coconut shrimp and jerk chicken were standouts, and the restaurant space itself—with its sculptural concrete ceiling and curated local artwork—is worth a visit in its own right.

Amazing food!
Secret Bay is ideal for honeymooners, couples seeking a true escape, or families who want the privacy of a villa stay combined with the ease of having everything handled for them. The interconnecting villa configurations make it an excellent option for multi-generational groups or friends traveling together who want proximity without sacrificing seclusion. This is not a property for guests who want a buzzy pool scene—it is for those who want to disappear into something extraordinary, surrounded by jungle, ocean, and world-class hospitality.

Need to know
Secret Bay arranges private transfers to and from the airport, and the journey itself through Dominica's dramatic landscape is part of the experience. Each villa comes stocked with regional Dominican ingredients for in-villa cooking—I highly recommend actually using them, as it's one of the more memorable and immersive touches the property offers. The dedicated in-villa iPhone for staff communication is genuinely seamless; feel free to use it freely for any request, large or small.
