Curator’s statement
Traveling to the Portuguese island of Madeira allowed me to experience one of the most beautiful destinations I’ve ever been to. Popularly referred to as the “Hawai’i of Europe” by Americans, Madeira is made up of lush, jaw-dropping nature that must be seen for yourself. If you are seeking a stay that allows you to feel the island’s history, relax and unwind, and be centrally located, look no further than Quinta da Casa Branca.

Tucked away in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, this five-star hotel is hidden in plain sight. The three acres of land that contribute to the oasis feel have a rich history. Originally a home to the owner’s family, the land has also experienced life as a vineyard and banana plantation, but is now, of course, a MICHELIN Key Hotel.
This boutique hotel offers 41 guest rooms in the main building, as well as a Manor House (where the owner and his family once lived), which has eight suites. All of these rooms, as well as the many amenities offered, are set within the botanical gardens that are maintained daily by the property’s 64 employees. When I say the grounds were immaculate, I mean it—this place is immaculate.

The exterior of the Manor House
Upon your arrival, you’re met with an architectural gem of a lobby, structured with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that allow you to soak in the property’s surroundings. The Quinta da Casa Branca team offers incredible hospitality to all guests, ensuring a personable and special experience.

The hotel lobby/reception
There’s no shortage of spaces to relax, read your book, or have a coffee or cocktail. Whether it be in the reception lobby or adjoined covered patio, next to one of the two outdoor pools, or at one of the three on-site dining options, there are many places to “just be” after a long day of hiking one of Madeira’s many trails.
All of the 41 guest rooms have either a private patio or balcony furnished with lounge chairs, allowing for fresh air and sunshine from the convenience of your own room. If you prefer strolling through the grounds, you’ll be met with banana trees, birds of paradise plants, and a garden growing fresh produce. Tucked behind Manor House is one outdoor pool (with a soon-to-be hot tub in the works). The other outdoor pool is located near the restaurant.

The pool found behind the Manor House
Aside from the eight suites found within the Manor House, guests can also enjoy dinner in The Dining Room restaurant, located on the main floor. This dining option allows guests to get dressed up and enjoy dinner together, whether it be inside the dining room or outside on the terrace.

Outdoor seating for The Dining Room restaurant
For guests seeking a more casual dining experience, the Restaurant & Bar Casa da Quinta offers both lunch and dinner. As for breakfast, a daily buffet is served at the Garden Pavilion Restaurant.

The view from Restaurant & Bar Casa da Quinta
As previously mentioned, this property is located in Funchal, which is Madeira’s “main hub.” If guests wish to go out and explore during their stay, they can easily access the city center, filled with shops and restaurants.
Quinta da Casa Branca gives you the best of both worlds when visiting Madeira: You can explore and be immersed in the island’s nature, both day and night. Whether you decide to rent a car and explore the entire island or stay within the hotel grounds, I absolutely recommend this Quinta da Casa Branca.
Need to know
While I didn’t see any children during my visit, the on-site team assured me that their property is family-friendly, and if you think about it, it makes sense: This property is tucked away and feels incredibly private and safe. The only cars that you will find driving throughout the three acres of land are driven by staff, making this property feel like nature’s playground for your children.
I recommend being considerate of your fellow guests (as always), but with Quinta da Casa Branca being on such a large amount of land, I do feel like there is space for all kinds of travelers at this hotel.
