Curator’s statement
There are journeys you research, and then there are journeys you experience. As a train and aviation enthusiast, I approached the Belmond Andean Explorer with high expectations. I had studied it extensively and thought I knew what to expect. Still, nothing fully prepares you for crossing the Peruvian Andes on one of the world’s most iconic luxury sleeper trains. Disclaimer: This was my first luxury sleeper train experience. It won’t be my last, but I’m glad this is the one that started it all. It has completely hooked me into exploring more rail journeys.

The Route: One of the World’s Most Scenic Rail Journeys
There is not a single dull moment on this route. The scenery is constantly evolving, glaciers, high plains, remote villages, and vast open landscapes that feel almost cinematic.
This is one of the most unique ways to experience southern Peru, especially access to Lake Titicaca and the Sumbay Caves, which feel far removed from typical travel routes.
The Cabin: Compact but exceptionally designed
The suite cabin exceeded my expectations. I had read it described as small, but that is relative to hotel rooms, not trains. In reality, it felt more spacious than expected and extremely well-thought out.
The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the en-suite bathroom was a highlight, especially the shower size for a train. Quick, important fact to point out: every cabin category includes a private bathroom.
The design is not as Art Deco as the VSOE or Royal Scotsman, but instead reflects Peruvian textiles and craftsmanship in a subtle, authentic way.

Dining: Exceptional at 4,000 meters
The food on board was outstanding. It is remarkable that such refined cuisine is produced in a moving train kitchen while crossing the Andes.
Each meal felt intentional and regionally inspired, often reflecting the landscapes visited that day. The presentation and consistency across all meals was particularly impressive given the operational environment.
Service: The true highlight
If one element defines the Andean Explorer, it is service.
The onboard team does not simply serve you. They are your hosts. From the beginning, we were greeted by name and treated with genuine warmth and attention throughout the journey.
Small details made a big impact: a server ensured a sauce I enjoyed was always available for the rest of the trip, and sparkling water was consistently offered at dinner to support hydration at altitude (a personal preference of mine).
It is this level of intuitive, thoughtful service that elevates the experience.
Altitude: A real but manageable factor
One important aspect of this journey is altitude. The train reaches some of the highest railway elevations in the world, and this should be taken seriously.
A nurse is available onboard and oxygen is provided when needed, which adds reassurance. That said, it is important to pace yourself with food, alcohol, and activity.
My first morning required adjustment, but with hydration, coca tea, and fresh juices, I was able to quickly adapt and fully enjoy the rest of the journey.
Need to know
The Belmond Andean Explorer is more than a train. It’s a slow, immersive way to experience one of the most breathtaking regions in the world.
For couples, curious travelers, and those seeking something beyond traditional luxury, this journey offers something truly special. It creates space for connection, and appreciation of both place and people.
This is a journey I will never forget and one I will confidently recommend as one of the most unique ways to experience Peru.
