Why I Love Cruising from New York City: A Quick Getaway Aboard Norwegian Aqua

One of the reasons I love cruising from New York City is just how quickly you can go from everyday life to vacation mode. For travelers throughout the Northeast, sailing from Manhattan eliminates so much of the friction that can come with a quick getaway—flights, airport security, potential delays, and often an extra travel day on either end. As parents of two young kids, we don’t always have the luxury of extra travel time, so that ease matters. We left our house at 10 a.m., took the three-hour train to New York, boarded Norwegian Aqua around 2 p.m. and, by 4 p.m., were poolside with cocktails in hand. And there’s something pretty special about kicking off a vacation by sailing past the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty—plus four hours from home to vacation mode is hard to beat.

What impressed me most about Aqua was the variety. It’s a large, lively ship, but it was surprisingly easy to find quieter spaces when we wanted to relax. My favorite was Ocean Boulevard on Deck 8, with its infinity pools, loungers, daybeds, and ocean views. I also loved the outdoor terrace at Indulge Food Hall and tucked-away Soleil Bar. My recommendation: explore beyond the main pool deck early in the trip and find the spaces that best match your vacation style.

I’ve sailed extensively on both luxury cruise lines and larger, mass-market ships, and I appreciate each for different reasons. While luxury cruising excels at personalized service and intimacy, a mega-ship experience can truly offer it all. On Aqua, we could spend the afternoon somewhere quiet, have a great dinner, see a full-scale show, listen to live music, and end the night at a lively bar. Norwegian does entertainment particularly well, and Syd Norman Presents: Rumours, a Fleetwood Mac Experience was a highlight. For dining, Hudson’s was our favorite included restaurant, while Indulge Food Hall is great for sampling a variety of cuisines.

I’d recommend Norwegian Aqua for couples, families, and multigenerational groups who want lots of choices. And for travelers who typically gravitate toward smaller or more luxurious ships, I wouldn’t automatically discount a mega-ship—the sheer variety can be a luxury in itself. Most of all, I recommend this type of sailing to Northeast travelers looking to maximize a quick getaway: no flights, unpack once, and within hours of leaving home, you’re already at sea.

Bermuda is an ideal destination to experience by cruise, especially from the Northeast. You get the feeling of a tropical escape without having to fly to the Caribbean. Many Norwegian itineraries also spend multiple days or overnight in Bermuda, giving you more time to explore the island’s pink-sand beaches, restaurants, and towns rather than rushing back to the ship after a few hours.

I also recommend keeping an eye on Norwegian’s rotating promotions, particularly for families and travelers looking for value. Offers can include discounted cruise fares or kids-sail-free deals on select sailings, while NCL’s Free at Sea package can bundle perks like beverages, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, and shore excursion credits into the vacation.
