Slovenia: Europe’s Best-Kept Secret
Curator’s statement

Slovenia was such a lovely surprise! One day I was mesmerized by the dramatic Julian Alps, the next I was exploring rolling wine country, and shortly thereafter strolling along the Adriatic coast—all within just a few hours of each other. To me, Slovenia offers the very best of Europe, but without the crowds and expense often associated with destinations like Italy or Greece. While small in size, Slovenia delivers an incredible variety of experiences that rival some of Europe’s most celebrated destinations. It’s a country that embraces nature, wellness, sustainability, and a slower pace of travel that feels refreshingly authentic. Read on to discover why I’ll be singing Slovenia's praises for years to come!

Slovenia was one of the most pleasant surprises of my travels and a destination I would enthusiastically recommend to clients seeking a European experience that feels authentic, uncrowded, and effortlessly beautiful.

Despite its small size, Slovenia offers an incredible diversity of landscapes and experiences—from vibrant cities and alpine lakes to rolling wine country and the Adriatic coast—all within just a few hours of one another.

I began my journey in Ljubljana, one of Europe’s most charming and walkable capitals. For several years, Ljubljana has held the title of one of Europe’s best destinations. ‌The city is lively yet relaxed, with beautiful architecture, riverside cafés, outdoor markets, and a welcoming atmosphere that immediately sets the tone for the country. It’s an ideal introduction to Slovenia and a wonderful destination for couples and families alike. One of the city’s most beloved symbols is the dragon, featured on Ljubljana’s coat of arms and immortalized on the iconic Dragon Bridge, which has greeted visitors since 1901.

The Julian Alps region was a highlight of the trip. Lake Bled is every bit as picturesque as the photos suggest, but nearby Lake Bohinj ultimately captured my heart. Surrounded by dramatic mountains and pristine nature, Bohinj feels more peaceful and less commercialized, making it perfect for active travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. The region offers endless opportunities for hiking, cycling, boating, and exploring Slovenia’s breathtaking scenery. In fact, Slovenia boasts more than 10,000 kilometers of hiking trails and some of Europe’s most scenic cycling routes, stretching from the Alps to the Adriatic.

Another standout experience was exploring Slovenia’s wine country, where family-owned wineries produce exceptional wines in a setting reminiscent of Tuscany—but with far fewer crowds. The hospitality was genuine, the food outstanding, and the overall experience felt intimate and authentic. I concluded my journey in Portorož on the Adriatic coast, where elegant seaside hotels, waterfront promenades, and easy access to nearby Piran provided the perfect ending to the trip.

Slovenia is an excellent choice for travelers who have already visited Europe’s more traditional destinations and are looking for something different. It is particularly well-suited for couples, food and wine lovers, active travelers, wellness seekers, and anyone looking to slow down and connect more deeply with a destination. Its compact size, excellent infrastructure, and remarkable variety make it easy to combine several distinct regions into one unforgettable journey.

Trip highlights:

  • Ljubljana: A charming, walkable capital city filled with riverside cafés, beautiful architecture, vibrant markets, and an easygoing atmosphere that makes it a joy to explore. ‌You must visit the Ljubljana Central Market and Klobasarna (their sausages are famous).

  • Lake Bohinj: Often described as Lake Bled’s wilder, more authentic cousin, Bohinj is surrounded by the dramatic Julian Alps and offers a more tranquil, nature-focused experience with exceptional hiking, cycling, and lake activities. ‌I absolutely fell in love with Hotel Bohinj and would base here for a few days and do day trips to Lake Bled.

  • Lake Bled: Slovenia’s iconic postcard destination featuring the picturesque island church, medieval clifftop castle, and breathtaking alpine scenery. ‌Make sure you order Cappuccino and the famous Bled Cream Cake.

  • Predjama Castle: One of the most unique castles in Europe, dramatically built into the face of a towering cliff and steeped in fascinating legends and history. I absolutely loved this tour!

  • Postojna Cave: One of the world’s most spectacular karst cave systems, Postojna Cave is over 2 million years old and stretches more than 24 kilometers (15 miles) underground. Visitors explore its dramatic stalactites, stalagmites, and vast chambers aboard a unique underground train, making it one of Slovenia’s most visited natural wonders.

  • Brda Wine Region: Frequently compared to Tuscany, Slovenia’s premier wine region is characterized by rolling vineyards, charming villages, and warm hospitality without the crowds. We visited a 3rd generation family-owned winery Emeran Reya Estate, where guests can enjoy exceptional wines, local cuisine, and personal interactions with the family owners in a stunning countryside setting.‌ This was one of my favorite experiences and I love the owners.

  • Portorož & Piran and Trieste: The perfect coastal finale, combining elegant seaside resorts, Adriatic views, waterfront dining, and the enchanting medieval town of Piran just minutes away.

Slovenia is a wonderful trip on its own, but it is even better when paired with Croatia. ‌Ljubljana is only a 1–1/2 hr. car ride from Zagreb airport.

Slovenia is dedicated to sustainability—there are over 400 beekeepers, and 300 destinations, providers, parks, sites and restaurants that have earned the Slovenian Green certificate.

Slovenia is a wellness destination with over 87 natural thermal springs in the Pannonian region with health resorts and spas across the region.
