For our Fourth of July getaway, we stayed at Ne’r Beach Motel in Wells, Maine, a relaxed, affordable spot that’s perfect for families. We booked a cozy cabin-style unit with a screened-in porch, queen bedroom, and a spacious living area complete with a twin bed, pull-out couch, and a fully stocked kitchenette. It had everything we needed, including utensils and cookware. The property also features a heated outdoor pool, which we enjoyed in peace while most guests were at the beach. The on-site grills were clean and well-stocked, perfect for an easy dinner after a full day out.
The motel’s location just off Route 1 (Post Road) gave us quick access to Wells Beach, Ogunquit, and Kennebunkport. A nearby plaza had everyday essentials, a gas station with beer and wine, a laundromat, and a Dunkin’, while larger stores like Hannaford and CVS were just a few minutes away. It’s a super convenient home base for exploring southern Maine without the crowds and high prices of more touristy areas.
We spent the Fourth watching fireworks at Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk (Wells doesn’t host its show, but nearby towns like Ogunquit do). It’s a busy spot, so we came early, packed snacks and layers, and settled in for the evening. The beach has a new playground and portable restrooms, and despite the crowds, the atmosphere was fun and family-friendly. Other trip highlights included antique hunting at Hidden Treasures and Anytime Antiques and a laid-back meal at The Napoli’s Italian Kitchen & Bar, where the Napoli pizza and red sangria were a hit.
We also discovered Pinsa in Lower Village, Kennebunk, a hidden gem for Roman-style pizza. We tried the pepperoni and cheese, and it was delicious, crispy, airy, and full of flavor. They offer outdoor seating, making it a great, casual family stop. Pizza lovers: This spot is a must. And of course, no visit is complete without a stop at Congdon’s Donuts for their famous homemade doughnuts or a visit to Congdon’s After Dark for food trucks under the stars. Whether you’re after beach time, good eats, or just a quiet place to relax, Wells offers a fun, easygoing Maine escape that checks all the boxes.

Must-have doughnuts!
Need to know
Expect crowds and lines, especially around the Fourth of July, as Maine’s southern coast is a hot summer destination. Traffic and parking can be challenging near beaches and popular restaurants, so plan to arrive early and pack your patience. A great alternative is the local trolley that runs along Post Road (Route 1), a convenient, affordable way to get around without the stress of driving. Just check the posted stops for current operating times and route details.
Pack smart: Bring layers, as temperatures can dip in the evenings (especially by the water), plus snacks and plenty of water for longer outings. If you’re heading to the beach or fireworks, don’t forget beach chairs or a blanket, bug spray, and maybe even a portable phone charger. If traveling with kids, having extra clothes and wet wipes on hand is always a good idea—things can get sandy fast.
Many restaurants and markets offer mobile ordering, which can help you skip lines, but seating and parking are often limited. If there’s a must-visit spot on your list (like Congdon’s Donuts or Pinsa), aim to go earlier in the day or on a weekday when the crowds are lighter. And finally, don’t forget your camera. From the rocky coastline to the charming antique shops, there are plenty of moments worth capturing.
