Curator’s statement

The Florida Keys have a reputation for laid-back, bohemian charm, but for those with a taste for the finer things, this island chain offers a world of luxury and exclusive experiences. Having spent a considerable amount of time living in the Keys myself, I’ve had the unique opportunity to discover and enjoy a different side of this destination. I’ve curated a list of my personal favorite experiences that go far beyond the usual tourist trail.

A private island escape to Little Palm Island Resort & Spa (Little Torch Key)

I can honestly say there’s no place like Little Palm Island. Getting there by private boat or seaplane feels like something out of a movie, and the moment you step onto the island, you can feel the stress melt away. The thatched-roof bungalows are stunning, and the fact that it’s adults-only makes it the perfect place for a quiet, romantic getaway. It’s a true sanctuary, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to completely disconnect.

My tip: Be sure to book your stay well in advance, especially during the winter season.

Bespoke private yacht charter

Forget the crowded tour boats—this is the way to experience the Keys’ famous waters. My favorite memory from a private charter was having our captain anchor at a secluded sandbar with not another boat in sight. We spent the afternoon swimming and were served an amazing gourmet lunch full of fresh seafood and cocktails right on the water. A private charter lets you craft a day that’s completely your own.

My tip: Ask your captain about a sunset cruise. The experience is truly magical with the golden hour light.

Sunset dining at Latitudes (Sunset Key)

Latitudes is an experience you simply can’t miss. The short ferry ride over to the private island sets the stage, and the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with the most incredible views of the ocean. My recommendation is to book a table just before sunset. The food is impeccable, but the view as the sun dips below the horizon is what makes it truly unforgettable.

My tip: Book your reservation a few weeks in advance, as sunset tables are the most coveted in Key West.

A seaplane journey to Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a VIP, this is it. The seaplane journey is an incredible adventure in itself, giving you breathtaking aerial views of the Marquesas Keys and the stunning water. When you land, you have the entire park to yourself for a while before the ferry arrives. My personal tip: pack a good camera—the photo opportunities from the air are spectacular.

My tip: Fly out on the earliest possible flight for the most private experience.

A Fishing charter in Islamorada, the “Sport Fishing Capital of the World”

I’ve had the pleasure of casting a line in a few different places, and I can tell you there’s a reason Islamorada holds its title. Even if you’re not an avid fisher, chartering a top-tier boat here is an unforgettable experience. My recommendation is to find a guide who specializes in light-tackle or backcountry fishing—it’s a much more hands-on and thrilling way to fish. You’ll spend the day in some of the most beautiful and serene waters, learning from a true expert. The best part? The captain handles everything from the bait to the gear, so all you have to do is enjoy the beautiful scenery and the excitement of the catch. It’s a perfect adventure, whether you’re a pro or have just fished a few times.

My tip: Ask your guide for restaurant recommendations for a “Hook & Cook,” where your catch can be prepared for dinner.

A spa day at Isla Bella Beach Resort (Marathon)

When I needed a moment of true relaxation in the Middle Keys, the Spa at Isla Bella was the perfect escape. The resort itself is beautiful, but the spa is a tranquil haven. My favorite treatment was a hot stone massage, which was exactly what I needed after a few days of adventure. It’s a fantastic spot to recharge and pamper yourself.

My tip: Arrive early to enjoy the beautiful pool and beach areas before your treatment begins.

Fine dining at Chef Michael’s (Islamorada)

Chef Michael’s is a true gem in Islamorada. I’ve dined here several times, and every meal has been exceptional. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the seafood is the freshest you’ll find. On my last visit, I did the “Hook & Cook,” where they prepared my day’s catch, and it was the best fish I’ve ever had. It’s an essential stop for any foodie.

My tip: For the best experience, call well ahead of time to make a reservation, as this place fills up fast.

Private eco-tour kayaking in the backcountry of Key West

This is one of my most memorable kayaking experiences. Our private guide took us through the mangrove tunnels in the backcountry of Key West, and it felt like we were in a secret world. We saw so many incredible birds and even had a friendly manatee swim right by our kayak. I love that it’s a way to truly connect with nature away from the crowds.

My tip: Book a morning tour for the calmest waters and to see the most active wildlife.

Private snorkel & dive charter to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary

As a snorkeling enthusiast, a private charter to Looe Key is a non-negotiable for me. The reef here is spectacular—it’s alive with so much color and marine life. Having a private boat and guide means you can go at your own pace and explore spots that the bigger boats can’t get to. It’s the best way to see the underwater wonders of the Keys without the crowds.

My tip: Request a guide who is also a certified marine naturalist to get the most out of your experience.

Sunset wine tasting on a catamaran (Key West)

For me, a sunset cruise is a must-do in Key West, but this wine-tasting experience takes it to the next level. The smaller, more intimate setting of a luxury catamaran is a perfect contrast to the bustling harbor. The curated wines and artisanal cheeses, paired with live music, made it a truly sophisticated and romantic evening on the water.

My tip: If you’re celebrating a special occasion, let the captain know beforehand for an extra personal touch.

Whether your ideal vacation involves tranquil seclusion, thrilling adventures, or world-class cuisine, the Florida Keys offers a side of luxury that often goes unseen. These experiences are just a glimpse of what’s possible when you look beyond the ordinary—and with the right guidance, they are all within your reach.

Need to know

Island-hopping & Transportation

While many people drive the Overseas Highway (US 1), a rental car is essential for a true Keys road trip. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. In Key West, however, parking can be challenging. I recommend parking your car and utilizing ride-sharing services, golf carts, or bikes to navigate the city. For a truly high-end experience, consider a private transfer service from the airport directly to your accommodation.

The best time to visit (for an ideal experience)

The “dry season,” from November to April, offers the best weather with comfortable temperatures and low humidity. This is the prime time for travel, so expect higher prices and a need to book everything well in advance. If you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind the heat, the “off-season” from May to October can be a great value, but be prepared for high humidity and the possibility of afternoon rain showers.

Book everything in advance

For the discerning traveler, spontaneity is not an option in the Keys, especially for the exclusive experiences on our list. Top-tier restaurants, private charters, and coveted spa appointments often book out weeks or even months ahead of time. This is where professional planning becomes a game-changer.

The Keys’ casual vibe is a dress code

Even at the most luxurious restaurants and resorts, the atmosphere remains “Keys casual.” This means you can leave formal wear and jackets at home. Instead, focus on high-quality resort-wear, linen pants, and stylish sundresses. Polished, comfortable, and chic is the way to go.

Packing for the sun & sea

High-quality polarized sunglasses are a must for reducing glare off the water and spotting marine life. Likewise, invest in a high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen to protect yourself and the delicate coral ecosystems. A wide-brimmed hat is also essential.

Tipping is expected

Service in the Keys is excellent, and tipping is an important part of the local culture. Be prepared to tip your fishing captains, boat crew, and spa therapists generously, as they are a crucial part of the service-driven economy.
