If you’re dreaming of a Maui getaway but craving a side of peace and privacy with your luxury, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua might just be your perfect match. I recently stayed at this stunning resort and can confidently say it offers one of the most serene and meaningful experiences you’ll find in Hawai'i.
Set on 54 acres overlooking Honokahua Bay, the property feels worlds away from the busier scenes of Wailea and Ka‘anapali. Instead, you’re surrounded by green rolling hills, fragrant flora, championship golf courses, and the soothing sound of the wind rustling through the trees. The moment you arrive, there’s a sense of calm that settles over you. It’s the kind of place where time slows down in all the best ways.

First impressions
The welcome here is quintessential Ritz-Carlton: warm, polished, and thoughtful. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the scent of fresh flowers and cool ocean breezes. There’s nothing like a personal welcome and refreshing tropical drink at check-in. The team here makes every guest feel like a VIP, and sure enough, my room had a handwritten note waiting for me along with a customized (and delicious) amenity designed to make my stay extra special.
This is one of those little touches that makes you feel less like a guest and more like ohana (family).
The rooms & suites
I stayed in a Deluxe Club Level room and loved how open and airy it felt. The decor blends modern island style with calming tones and natural textures that echo the surrounding landscape. The marble bathroom with a soaking tub added a spa-like touch, and the balcony was the perfect spot to relax and take in the views.
Club Level rooms here elevate the entire experience. The indoor-outdoor club lounge is one of the best I’ve encountered, offering five daily food and beverage presentations that keep you perfectly fueled from morning to evening. Don’t forget to try one of their famous mai tais. The attentive lounge staff feels like a personal concierge, often anticipating your needs before you even realize them.

Pools, beaches & beyond
The resort’s three-tiered pool complex is absolutely dreamy. Cascading waterfalls connect each level, with plenty of spaces to suit your mood—from lively family-friendly areas to peaceful adults-only quiet zones. I loved spending time near one of the whirlpools with sweeping ocean views—the perfect spot to catch a Maui sunset. For an extra touch of luxury, consider reserving a private cabana where you can lounge in comfort with dedicated service and stunning poolside views.

Beach lovers will want to take the short walk or complimentary shuttle down to D.T. Fleming Beach. It’s rugged and beautiful, great for boogie-boarding and long walks. For calmer waters, Kapalua Bay Beach is a short distance away and offers incredible snorkeling.
Dining
Every meal here felt special. Breakfast at Ulana Terrace came with ocean views for days and the smell of fresh pastries in the air. I loved taking my time over coffee and tropical fruit while the morning light danced on the water.
For dinner, Banyan Tree is a must-try. The menu feels elevated but still so connected to Maui, with local flavors shining through every dish.

Ending the night with cocktails and live music at Alaloa Lounge was the perfect way to wrap up the day.
Unique experiences
One of the most memorable parts of my stay was participating in the resort’s Ambassadors of the Environment program. Led by naturalists trained under Jean-Michel Cousteau, these activities help guests connect with Maui’s ecosystem and culture. From reef snorkeling to tidepool explorations and guided hikes, it’s great for adults and kids alike.

The cultural programming at the resort is also worth mentioning. Daily lei-making classes, hula lessons, and ukulele workshops make it easy to immerse yourself in Hawaiian traditions.
Things to know
Kapalua feels more remote and laid-back than other parts of Maui. It’s cooler and breezier, which creates the lush green surroundings, but it also means you might want a light layer in the evenings.
While the resort isn’t directly on the beach, the short walk or shuttle ride to D.T. Fleming is easy and worth it. I also recommend renting a car if you want to explore more of Maui beyond Kapalua.
It’s worth noting that the resort was thoughtfully built to preserve the Honokahua Preservation Site, a sacred Hawaiian burial ground. This deep respect for the land and culture adds to the authenticity of the experience.

Need to know
One last insider tip: Don’t miss the Tales of the Kapa Moe luau. Set in a beautifully renovated pavilion, this isn’t your typical luau—it’s a theatrical journey through Hawaiian legend with aerial dancers, fire-knife performances, traditional chants, and hula, all paired with a gourmet buffet featuring the freshest local flavors. It’s Maui’s newest and most luxurious luau.
