Solo Weekend in London
Curator’s statement

Earlier this month I took my first international solo trip to London. As a history enthusiast and former English literature major, I loved finally experiencing places that have lived in my imagination all my life, especially visiting the British Museum and exploring the city itself. A few standout moments included attending the Royal Ballet’s production of Giselle and seeing The Tempest performed at Shakespeare’s Globe. My trip felt like a perfect blend of stretching beyond my comfort zone and a kind of pilgrimage for this Anglophile.

The stay

My stay at Flemings Mayfair was, in every sense, a gentle luxury. My room was beautifully decorated, the kind of space that invites you to linger a little longer in the mornings, and it even featured a small terrace. What made the experience even more special was the staff, who greeted me by name and seemed genuinely invested in making sure I felt comfortable and cared for. The location, too, felt special. Each day began with a walk through St. James’s Park, a peaceful ritual that grounded me before getting on with my day.

One evening, I treated myself to dinner at Ormer Mayfair, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, and it quickly became one of the most memorable meals of the trip. Dining alone can sometimes feel intimidating, but here it felt anything but lonely. The waitstaff and sommeliers created such a warm, welcoming atmosphere that I felt completely at ease. I opted for the five-course tasting menu, and each dish, paired thoughtfully with wine, was unique and delicious. It was the kind of experience that encouraged me to slow down, to savor not just the food but the entire experience.

Solo travel sites in London

Traveling on my own gives me the freedom to move at my own pace, which for this trip often meant long, unhurried hours spent wandering through places like the British Museum and the National Gallery. I loved being able to linger in the galleries that caught my attention and skip past others without guilt. Between museum visits, I found myself ducking into small shops and bookstores, with Choosing Keeping becoming a particular favorite for its beautifully curated stationery and writing supplies. Quiet moments of discovery like these always end up being my favorite memories when I return home.

Evening activities

In the evenings, I made a point to have some structure, which helped transform solo time into something I genuinely looked forward to. One night, I attended a ballet at Royal Opera House, an experience that felt both elegant and immersive. Another evening, after seeing a play at Shakespeare’s Globe, I walked along the Thames before treaing myself to dinner at Swan London. On afternoons and evenings without plans, I found comfort in the simplicity of slipping into a neighborhood pub, ordering something comforting along with a pint, and my book as my company.

In sum

More than anything, the trip was defined by focusing on being present in the moment and taking in my surroundings. I spent hours wandering through parks and neighborhoods. I was lucky with the early springtime weather, with stretches of sunshine that made everything feel just a bit more special. Everywhere I turned, there were daffodils in bloom, their bright yellow punctuating the soft greens of early spring.

Need to know

My solo trip to London was a lovely experience. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in easing in to traveling on their own. The city has enough to offer to avoid feeling isolated and plenty of options for safe accommodations and transportation. Research and support ahead of time is also important for safety and feeling comfortable in a new environment.
