Oaxaca's coffee culture is a journey through tradition, flavor and ambiance. Each café offers a unique experience, a reflection of the city's diverse and vibrant character.

  • Cafeto & Baristas: This charmingly cozy café is a must-visit for coffee purists. The aroma of freshly ground beans fills every nook and cranny, creating an intimate and inviting atmosphere. With its limited seating, Cafeto & Baristas encourages a sense of community, where coffee lovers can connect and share their passion for a good cup of brew.

    • My order: classic cappuccino (served with a cute little cup of pickles on the side) and a freshly prepared sandwich.

  • Muss Cafe: Attached to boutique hotel Casa Antoinetta, Muss Cafe is an oasis where you can savor your coffee amidst lush greenery and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The expansive rooftop offers stunning views of Oaxaca, making it the perfect spot to relax and recharge. Muss Cafe also boasts a delicious food menu, making it a great option for a leisurely brunch or lunch. The cafe on the ground floor is small yet welcoming. Grab your pour over and a treat and you’re set for the morning!

    • My Order: Chemex coffee, veggie omelette and salad

  • Cafe Rustiko: The rustic-chic decor and warm ambiance at Cafe Rustiko create the perfect setting to unwind with a cup of their signature Oaxacan blend. Their coffee is sourced from local farmers and roasted in-house, ensuring a fresh and flavorful cup every time.

    • My order: Moca Oaxaca

  • Marito & Moglie: This hidden gem is a must-visit for those seeking a tranquil escape. The enchanting back patio is surrounded by greenery, offering a peaceful retreat from the city's bustle. Marito & Moglie also serves up delicious eats, making it a great option for breakfast or a casual lunch with friends.

    • My order: nitro coffee and avocado toast with arugula, feta cheese, pumpkin seeds and salsa macha on sourdough bread

  • Cafe Lupita: For a taste of authentic Oaxacan tradition, head to Cafe Lupita. Neighbors stopping in to say hi and travelers alike are welcome. It felt like a little bit of home. A peaceful cafe, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a book. Cafe Lupita also offers a variety of traditional Oaxacan dishes, making it a great place to experience the local culture.

    • My order: cappuccino

  • Oaxaca en una Taza: Step back in time at Oaxaca en una Taza. This charming cafe, with its classic atmosphere, is located directly across from the Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca. There are multiple locations in the city, but this one was my favorite. The colorful paper cranes hanging from the ceiling dance gently when there’s a breeze, creating a tranquil ambiance. The indoor/outdoor patio in the back is the perfect place to relax and savor a cup of coffee while enjoying the company of friends and family.

    • My order: iced coffee and a croissant

  • Cocuche Artesanía & Café: Cocuche, near the City Centro hotel, fits right in with the neighborhood vibe with its eclectic and art-filled interior. I stopped in on a warm spring day and indulged in their delicious affogato, the perfect blend of rich espresso and creamy ice cream. This brightly decorated spot was a nice respite from my explorations throughout the city and the smoking troll doll painting was great for a laugh, too.

    • My order: affogato Oaxaqueño
