Where to stay in Portland, Maine

I’ve had the chance to visit Portland, Maine many times, and I’ve stayed at the Aloft Portland, a modern, upbeat hotel perfectly located in the heart of the city. The Aloft’s sleek design, comfortable rooms, and vibrant atmosphere make it a great home base—just steps from the Old Port, restaurants, and waterfront. The staff was welcoming, and I loved how easy it was to walk everywhere.

Portland itself is a dream for foodies, creatives, and coastal explorers. I spent mornings strolling the Eastern Promenade Trail, afternoons ferrying out to Peaks Island, and evenings indulging in lobster rolls from Highroller and delicious bites at Central Provisions. The craft beer scene is a must for enthusiasts—favorites include Bissell Brothers and Maine Beer Company. For something sweet, don’t miss Holy Donut (yes, the potato donuts live up to the hype!).

Portland is ideal for couples, solo travelers, and anyone who loves a mix of seaside charm and city culture. With great dining, outdoor adventures, and boutique shopping, it’s a refreshing and approachable destination—and Aloft Portland keeps you close to it all with comfort and style.

Need to know

Getting around: Portland is a very walkable city, especially around the Old Port and downtown. If you’re heading to nearby lighthouses or beaches, renting a bike or car for the day is a good option. Ride-shares are also readily available.

Pack for coastal weather: Even in summer, Portland can get breezy and cool in the evenings, especially by the water. Bring a light jacket or sweater just in case.

Don’t miss the lighthouses: Beyond Portland Head Light, Bug Light, and Spring Point Ledge Light are worth visiting too—less crowded and great for photos.

Local shopping: Support small businesses by browsing local boutiques.

When to go: July and August are peak season with the best weather, but late June and early September offer a slightly quieter experience with nearly all activities still available.
