Sailing, Stone Streets & Seafood: My Croatian Escape to Split
Curator’s statement

Split is one of those places that grabs hold of you the moment you arrive. Maybe it’s the shimmer of the crystal-clear Adriatic, the scent of grilled seafood drifting through cobbled alleys, or the sound of café chatter echoing from centuries-old stone walls. Whatever it is, it’s magic—and I was completely swept up in it.

From the moment we landed, Split felt like summer in full color. The Old Town, anchored by the breathtaking Diocletian’s Palace, is a living, breathing museum. This UNESCO World Heritage site isn’t roped off or tucked behind glass—it’s part of the city’s daily life. Locals still live inside the palace walls, and within the maze of narrow alleys, you’ll find cozy wine bars, boutiques, sun-dappled courtyards, and little cafes where you could sit for hours, just people-watching.

Ancient walls. Timeless beauty. Diocletian’s Palace, Split.

We based ourselves just outside the city at Le Méridien Lav, in Podstrana. It’s about a 25- to 30-minute drive from Old Town but completely worth it for the serenity and stunning marina setting. Our two-bedroom family suite was spacious and modern, but the real highlight was the infinity pool overlooking the sea—it made every morning feel like a luxury escape. The spa was sleek and tranquil, and the breakfast spread on the patio had everything you could dream of, all served with warm, Croatian hospitality. Down at the beach club, we sipped cocktails, lounged in shaded cabanas, and indulged in beautifully plated seafood dishes that felt more like art than food.

Tucked between the mountains and the sea, Podstrana is where nature and tranquility meet.

One of the most memorable parts of the trip was our half-day speedboat tour to the Blue Lagoon. Let’s just say... the ride was lively. My mom was half-laughing, half-screaming as we cut across the waves, but that made it all the more unforgettable. Once we arrived at the Blue Lagoon, everything slowed down. I swam and snorkeled in the calm turquoise waters, sunlight dancing around me, then stretched out on the boat deck to soak up the sun.

Snorkel. Swim. Soak it all in. Blue Lagoon Croatia

We ended the tour in Trogir, a charming little medieval town that felt like stepping into a time capsule. With its ancient stone streets and the stunning Cathedral of St. Lovro, it’s easy to understand why it’s another UNESCO gem.

But the true highlight of the trip? Renting a private motorboat for island hopping. With a local skipper guiding us, we set off to explore Hvar, Brač, Šolta, Biševo, and Sveti Andrija. Each island had its own vibe. Hvar was chic and full of life, Brač wowed us with its famous Zlatni Rat beach, Šolta felt untouched and serene, and Biševo’s Blue Cave was otherworldly. There’s something incredibly freeing about being out on the water, hopping from one sun-drenched island to the next, with nothing on your agenda but lunch and a swim.

Endless blue. Adriatic magic from above.

And speaking of food: Croatia is a dream if you love seafood (and as a pescatarian, I was in heaven). One of my favorite meals of the trip was at Restaurant Laganini, a cozy little spot tucked into the heart of Diocletian’s Palace. The atmosphere was warm and intimate, and the food—traditional Dalmatian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients and a creative twist—was absolutely incredible.

Need to know

To me, Split isn’t just a destination—it’s a feeling. It’s salty air, sun-warmed stone, lazy afternoons, and vibrant nights. It’s history that hums beneath your feet and hospitality that feels effortless. Whether you’re lounging on a boat, getting lost in Old Town, or sipping espresso by the sea, Split invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and fall in love with everything around you. And I absolutely did.
