Singita Kwitonda: The Kataza House
Curator’s statement

Singita Kataza House is a private villa of extraordinary scale and refinement, set within Singita Kwitonda inside Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Arriving to find that the grand, lodge-like structure before us was our own private residence was a moment of pure, breathtaking disbelief. Four beautifully appointed en-suite rooms, sweeping views of the volcanoes, and the unmatched elegance of Singita’s design made every moment feel cinematic. It is the rare destination that exceeds your imagination before you have even unpacked.

Singita Kataza House is not simply a place to stay. It is a destination unto itself. A private villa set within Singita Kwitonda inside Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Kataza House offers something increasingly rare in luxury travel: complete, uncompromised exclusivity. From the moment you arrive, the property is entirely yours. Your own butlers, your own private chef, your own dedicated guide... an entire team whose sole focus is you. The experience feels less like a hotel stay and more like being welcomed into a very extraordinary private home, one that happens to sit on the edge of one of the most remarkable ecosystems on earth.

The house itself is breathtaking in every sense. Four beautifully appointed bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom and private outdoor space, are arranged across two wings: three rooms in one, and a stunning primary suite in the other. There is not a single ordinary corner. Volcanic stone, warm wood, and sweeping walls of glass blur the line between interior and landscape, so that whether you are sitting by the fire, relaxing outside with the volcanoes stretching across the horizon, or waking to mist rolling through the forest, you feel wholly immersed in the natural world. A gym, a massage room, and a hot tub overlooking the volcanoes and roaming buffalo round out the amenities, all of it designed with a calm, modern elegance that feels deeply rooted in Rwandan culture without ever sacrificing comfort.

What sets Kataza apart from any other property I have visited is the extraordinary level of thoughtfulness woven into every detail. The night before your gorilla trek, the team gathers with you in the villa’s private movie theater for a full briefing. They walk you through everything you need to know about the trek and then fit you personally for boots, gloves, walking sticks, and anything else you may need, all provided for you at no additional effort on your part. You show up the next morning completely equipped and fully prepared. That same spirit of anticipatory care carries through every single day of your stay. Morning coffee arrives at precisely the right moment. Meals are fresh, creative, and beautifully presented, with a menu that somehow always seems to reflect exactly what you were craving. Each evening, returning to your room means discovering something personal waiting for you, a small and thoughtful touch tied to a conversation from earlier that day, always accompanied by a perfect cup of chamomile tea. Background music plays softly throughout the villa at all hours, and evenings wind down with stories by the fire and a glass of wine chosen to match the mood.

Need to know

One of the most important things to know is that staying at Singita Kataza House places you directly on the grounds of Singita Kwitonda, meaning you have full access to all of the resort’s amenities and activities throughout your stay. It is the best of both worlds: the total privacy of your own exclusive villa combined with the broader offerings of one of Africa’s most celebrated safari properties.

Beyond the gorilla trek, the experiences available to you are genuinely memorable. We had the incredible opportunity to plant trees on the property, a beautiful and grounding moment that connects you to the land and to the larger conservation mission that Singita is so deeply committed to. We also spent time in their pottery center, creating pieces by hand that were then carefully shipped back to us in the United States after our return. It is exactly the kind of meaningful, unhurried experience that sets this destination apart from anywhere else. You leave with more than photographs. You leave with something made by your own hands, a piece of Rwanda that travels home with you.

I stayed two nights, though three would be the perfect sweet spot, allowing you the time and space to truly indulge in everything Kataza House/ Singita Kwitonda has to offer.
