A can’t-miss experience is an afternoon at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, an ethical tourism operator dedicated to conservation and the care of injured, orphaned, and displaced animals. Hand-feed the many kangaroos, who seem delightfully torn between more snacks and more chest rubs, and meet Lucy, the friendly Cape Barren goose who happily follows visitors all around the property.

For something truly special, join a night tour: Help feed dinner and tuck some of the animals in, then greet the nocturnal residents as they wake for breakfast. You might even get lucky and get the chance to snuggle a wombat, like the one we met—rescued and being carefully prepared for a return to the wild when he’s ready.

Hobart is the perfect spot for having an evening drink outside and watching the wildlife.

Taste your way through Salamanca Market, a vibrant Saturday tradition and a destination in its own right. Wander through seemingly endless stalls offering everything from locally sourced fruits and vegetables to hearty breakfast and lunch fare, plus plenty of sweet treats. Along the way, browse books, clothing, artwork, unique souvenirs, and handcrafted home goods. Be sure to leave extra room in your luggage—you’ll want to take a piece of it all home with you.

Experience a private, guided wellness walk to a hidden plunge pool. After a refreshing swim in the crisp, crystal-clear waters, unwind with a guided meditation and a warm drink—ending your session wrapped in cozy calm, surrounded by nature.

Ask your concierge—or any local—and they’ll happily point you to the best spot to see a platypus family in the wild. Watch quietly from a respectful distance and enjoy the magic of the moment. Fun fact: Male platypuses have a venomous spur on their hind legs … so watch from a distance.

Visit MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), a must-see for any art lover. If you’re short on time, allow three to four hours; to fully immerse yourself, set aside the entire day. Be sure to explore the museum’s diverse food and beverage offerings along the way. For an added experience, take the high-speed ferry to MONA—about 30 minutes each way. And don’t forget to check opening days and hours before you go.

Need to know

Plan your itinerary to coincide with the vibrant Saturday tradition of the Salamanca Market, a destination truly in its own right.

As public transportation options are limited across the island, I highly recommend securing a rental car or coordinating rideshare services to ensure you can effortlessly explore every breathtaking natural landscape at your own pace.
