A stay on Elbow Cay, just a short ferry ride from Marsh Harbor, offers the perfect blend of laid-back island living, adventure, and authentic Bahamian charm. Unlike larger Caribbean destinations, Elbow Cay moves at a slower, more peaceful pace where golf carts replace cars, mornings begin with ocean sunrises, and days are spent boating, beach hopping, and enjoying life outdoors. Whether travelers want a quiet beach escape or an active week on the water, this island delivers both effortlessly.

One of the best ways to experience the Abacos is by boat. Renting a small fishing boat or chartering with a local captain opens up endless opportunities for adventure, from offshore fishing for mahi mahi and tuna to exploring nearby cays and hidden beaches. A day trip to Pete’s Pub & Gallery in Little Harbor is a must. Guests can explore pirate caves, browse the Johnston family bronze gallery, and enjoy fresh seafood and cocktails right on the water. The surrounding turquoise water and relaxed atmosphere perfectly capture what makes the Abacos so special.

In Hope Town, the iconic striped lighthouse is one of the island’s highlights and worth the climb for panoramic views over the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic Ocean. The settlement itself is charming and walkable, with colorful cottages, small museums, marinas, and beautifully rebuilt island homes lining the narrow roads. One of my favorite things about Elbow Cay is that travelers can choose their own pace—spend the day exploring by golf cart and boat, or simply enjoy quiet beach walks and slow afternoons by the water. For visitors traveling in late spring or early summer, experiencing Junkanoo is unforgettable. The vibrant Bahamian celebration filled with handmade costumes, drumming, dancing, and music brings incredible energy and culture to the island.

Tahiti Beach on the southern end of the island is another can’t-miss experience, especially at low tide when visitors can do the “sand dollar shuffle,” search for shells and relax in the calm, shallow water. The island also offers incredible sunrise and sunset experiences depending on which side of Elbow Cay you are on. Watching the sunrise near Abaco Inn or enjoying sunset cocktails at Firefly Sunset Resort quickly becomes part of the daily rhythm here. Whether enjoying lunch at On Da Beach Bar & Grill, walking the quiet northern beaches with coffee in hand, or spending the day boating through crystal-clear water, Elbow Cay is the kind of destination that feels wonderfully untouched, peaceful, and deeply restorative.

Need to know
Book accommodations well in advance, especially for spring and early summer travel, as vacation rentals and boutique properties on Elbow Cay fill quickly during peak season.
Reserve golf carts early as well, since they are the primary mode of transportation around Hope Town. Most carts have speed governors, so embrace the slower island pace and enjoy the scenic rides around the cay.
The ferry ride from Marsh Harbor to Hope Town is part of the experience and how many locals travel between islands. It’s casual, easy, and a great introduction to the laid-back Bahamian lifestyle.
If boating or fishing is part of your ideal vacation, book fishing charters or boat rentals ahead of time, particularly during popular fishing months. Offshore fishing for mahi mahi and tuna is excellent in the area, and boating is one of the best ways to explore nearby cays and beaches.
Grocery shopping is part of the island adventure. Picking up groceries, drinks, and supplies by golf cart may take a bit longer than visitors are used to, but that slower rhythm is exactly what makes the destination so special. Travelers should expect a relaxed pace and limited inventory on some items compared to larger destinations.
Don’t miss local favorites like Mackey's Takeout and the local Bahamian bakeries for fresh banana bread and coffee in the mornings. For sunset dining and cocktails, Firefly Sunset Resort is absolutely worth reserving at least one dinner during your stay.
