Where to stay in Riviera Maya

Unlock perks by contacting Marilyn Olson to book your trip.

Riviera Maya is one of those destinations that means something completely different depending on where you stay.

After visiting five standout luxury resorts, from adults-only all-inclusives to ultra-private wellness retreats and expansive multi-gen properties, one thing became very clear: These hotels may share a coastline, but they deliver entirely different experiences.

This is also why two travelers can visit Riviera Maya and come home with wildly different opinions.

The hotel makes the trip.

Below is how I would match each of these properties to the right traveler, based on firsthand experience.

Enjoy Riviera Maya!

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya

Best for: Destination weddings and couples who want luxury without logistics

Secrets Akumal was my first adults-only all-inclusive and my first true luxury all-inclusive, and it absolutely set the bar. The resort is lush and jungle-forward, creating a romantic, immersive atmosphere that feels intentionally designed rather than mass-produced.

The rooms are generously sized and thoughtfully appointed, with soaking tubs both inside the room and on the balcony. The Unlimited Luxury concept works beautifully here, with no wristbands, no visible upsells, and service that feels seamless throughout the stay. Dining is varied and high quality, though best suited for intimate tables rather than large groups.

One of the most memorable experiences was a candlelit dinner tucked into the garden, an evening that felt magical and personal. With stunning turquoise water, easy access to cenotes, and the option to bike through the surrounding area, Secrets Akumal is an excellent choice for destination weddings and couples who want a high-end experience that still feels effortless.

Chablé Maroma

Best for: Romantic getaways, elevated girls’ trips, and buyout weddings

Chablé Maroma is one of my absolute favorite hotels in the Riviera Maya. From the moment you arrive, the experience feels transportive. Guests are taken directly to the spa for a grounding ceremony designed to clear energy and set the tone for the stay, and it genuinely shifts how you feel in the space.

The accommodations are deeply private, each with its own entrance, plunge pool, and both indoor and outdoor showers. There is even a chaise lounge in the bathroom, which perfectly captures the property’s approach to quiet luxury. While the resort is not adults-only, it is very much not designed for children and maintains an intentionally serene atmosphere.

The beach is expansive and uncrowded, with loungers set among palm trees for privacy. Dining is exceptional, led by a Michelin-starred chef, and the overall experience is refined, calm, and restorative. This is a standout choice for travelers seeking privacy, presence, and a slower, more intentional pace.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Best for: Multi-generational families who want variety without compromise

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is essentially three resorts in one: an adults-only section, a family-friendly section, and a tranquil Zen area, all connected by frequent shuttles. This layout allows travelers to move between experiences without ever leaving the property.

Despite its size, the resort can feel surprisingly quiet and private, depending on occupancy. Service, dining, and on-property shopping are all polished and elevated, with a level of refinement that feels more akin to a luxury city resort than a traditional all-inclusive.

For families traveling across generations, this property truly shines. There is exceptional programming for children and teens, including a teen spa, while adults still enjoy excellent dining and serene spaces. When food and beverages are factored in, the overall investment often compares closely with non all-inclusive luxury resorts, making it a compelling option for families who value both ease and quality.

Rosewood Mayakoba

Best for: Multi-generational luxury travel and milestone celebrations

Mayakoba is known for its winding lagoons and interconnected waterways, where guests move throughout the destination by boat. Rosewood Mayakoba stands out as the most refined and exclusive option within the complex.

This is a true splurge property, with stunning accommodations, exceptional service, and a setting that feels calm and elegant from the moment you arrive. The design emphasizes space and privacy, making it particularly well suited for families traveling together or celebrating special occasions.

While I toured rather than stayed overnight, the experience was consistent with everything the property is known for, including outstanding dining and a sense of quiet sophistication. For travelers seeking elevated luxury in a natural setting, Rosewood Mayakoba delivers at the highest level.

NIZUC Resort & Spa

Best for: Girls’ trips, families, and travelers who value convenience

NIZUC Resort & Spa is beautifully designed, thoughtfully spread out, and exceptionally well located just minutes from the Cancún airport. While you can see Cancún in the distance, the resort itself feels peaceful and removed from the bustle.

One of the standout features is the adults-only beachfront pool, which offers a relaxed, refined atmosphere ideal for couples or friends traveling together. Families are equally well accommodated, with separate pools and areas designed specifically for children.

The rooms are gorgeous, the service is consistently excellent, and the overall experience balances luxury with ease. For travelers who want a high-end stay without a long transfer or complicated logistics, NIZUC is an excellent choice that works equally well for families and adults-focused trips.

Need to know

  • Book the hotel first.
In Riviera Maya, the hotel is not just where you sleep. It determines the pace of the trip, the dining experience, the level of privacy, and how much planning is required once you arrive. Two travelers staying minutes apart can have completely different vacations.

  • Always arrange a private transfer.
Skip shared shuttles. A private transfer makes arrival and departure seamless, avoids long waits, and immediately sets the tone for a luxury stay. This is especially important after long travel days or when arriving with family or a group.

  • Understand European Plan versus all-inclusive.
European Plan, often abbreviated as EP, means your room is included but meals and drinks are paid for separately. Many luxury resorts in Riviera Maya operate on this model. While nightly rates may appear lower or higher at first glance, the total cost of an EP stay often ends up very similar to a luxury all-inclusive once dining, drinks, and resort experiences are factored in.

  • Do not compare nightly rates alone.
Comparing a luxury all-inclusive to a European Plan resort by room rate alone can be misleading. The real value is in what is included, how often you plan to dine on property, and whether ease or flexibility matters more to you.

  • Think about your group size early.
Some resorts are designed around intimate dining and quiet spaces, while others are built for families and larger groups. This affects everything from restaurant layouts to pool design and overall flow of the property.

  • Consider how much activity you want.
Some properties are intentionally serene and restorative. Others offer constant programming, multiple pools, and full schedules of activities. Neither approach is better. The right choice depends on how you want your days to feel.

  • Location matters more than you think.
Resorts closer to Cancún offer quicker airport transfers, while properties farther south feel more secluded and jungle-forward. Both can be wonderful, but the difference impacts travel time and overall atmosphere.

  • Plan dining and experiences in advance.
Even at luxury resorts, popular restaurants, spa treatments, and special experiences can book up quickly. Having reservations handled ahead of time removes stress and ensures you experience the property at its best.

  • This is not a destination to wing it.
Riviera Maya rewards thoughtful planning. When the hotel, room category, and logistics are aligned, the trip feels effortless. When they are not, even beautiful resorts can fall short of expectations.
