Curator’s statement
Airline food has been a comedy of errors for decades. We have seen it regress over the years, and in some cases, it has disappeared altogether. With travel picking up, some airlines have made improvements and have reintroduced meals on flights.

I want to share my previous experience with Qatar Airways. I recently flew business class on QR764 (YUL-DOH). The 4-course meal service started with an amuse bouche and an appetizer, a lobster tail with cauliflower mousseline (heirloom carrots, green asparagus and basil oil). For the main course, I selected the Canadian lobster thermidor with lime, roasted cherry tomatoes and saffron dill risotto. Finally, for dessert, I picked the Mont Blanc sundae (vanilla ice cream, caramelized chestnut and cherry Amarena).

Aside from the meal itself, a selection of artisan breads (ciabatta, multigrain and pretzel) were also provided with butter and Monte Vibiano extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). EVOO infused with balsamic vinegar, tomato, chili or spicy lemon were also available upon request. And of course, there was a comprehensive beverage menu with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.
Need to know
While ticket prices in business class may be more or less the same for a given route, the quality of offerings such as in-flight dining is certainly not created equal. Overall, the meal service was meticulous and the quality of the food served during the flight was stellar. As the old cliché goes, you’re “not in Kansas anymore” when it comes to in-flight dining aboard Qatar Airways.
