Based in Rapid City, we spent our days exploring iconic sites like Mount Rushmore National Memorial, discovering the hidden beauty of Wind Cave National Park, and hiking through the otherworldly terrain of Badlands National Park. One of the most memorable surprises of the trip was how much history and variety this region offers—from walking the Presidential Trail at Mount Rushmore to learning Cold War history at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and hiking among the rugged formations of the Badlands. Between scenic drives, wildlife sightings, local breweries, and incredible meals like dinner at Tally's Silver Spoon, this South Dakota getaway proved to be the perfect blend of adventure, history, and classic American road trip nostalgia.

A weekend road trip from Denver to Rapid City is one of the best ways to experience the dramatic landscapes, fascinating history, and outdoor adventure that western South Dakota has to offer. Rapid City makes an excellent home base, with easy access to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wind Cave National Park, and Badlands National Park, while also offering a fun downtown filled with breweries, local restaurants, and a lively atmosphere after long days of exploring. One of our favorite meals of the trip was at Tally's Silver Spoon, which is absolutely worth making reservations for in advance. Rapid City is ideal for travelers wanting a balance of outdoor adventure, history, and small-city charm without constantly changing hotels throughout the trip.

Mount Rushmore
We dedicated one day to exploring Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills region, which deserves far more time than many travelers initially expect. Arriving early is key during the summer months to avoid both crowds and the midday heat. Walking the Presidential Trail provides some of the best close-up views of the monument and allows visitors to appreciate the incredible engineering and history behind the memorial. The visitor center is also worth spending time in, especially for travelers interested in American history and the story behind the construction of Mount Rushmore. The surrounding Black Hills are stunning, with winding scenic roads, pine forests, and frequent wildlife sightings that make the drive itself part of the experience.

Wind Cave National Park—the distance is MUCH farther than the picture portrays.
That same afternoon, we continued on to Wind Cave National Park, which ended up being one of the most surprising highlights of the trip. While smaller and often overlooked compared to other national parks, Wind Cave offers a unique combination of underground cave exploration and beautiful prairie landscapes above ground. Ranger-led cave tours are the best way to experience the park and learn about the rare boxwork cave formations that make Wind Cave so geologically significant. Above ground, the park is peaceful and uncrowded, with excellent hiking and opportunities to spot bison, prairie dogs, and elk. We especially enjoyed hiking portions of the Centennial Trail to Lookout Point, where the rolling hills and wide-open views felt completely different from the rugged scenery found elsewhere in South Dakota.

Wildlife in Badlands National Park

Hiking around Badlands National Park
Before entering Badlands National Park, we stopped at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, which added an unexpected and fascinating historical component to the trip. The exhibits detailing Cold War history and the role of the missile silos in U.S. defense strategy were incredibly well done. Travelers interested in visiting the underground silo should reserve tickets as early as possible because availability is extremely limited and often sells out well in advance. From there, driving into Badlands National Park feels almost otherworldly, with dramatic rock formations, layered canyons, and sweeping prairie landscapes unlike anywhere else in the United States. The park is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, when the changing light creates incredible colors across the formations. We explored several areas of the park, including the Fossil Exhibit Trail and the popular Notch Trail, which includes a wooden ladder climb and rewarding panoramic views. Driving the park from east to west allows travelers to fully appreciate how expansive and diverse the Badlands landscape truly is.

Hiking around Badlands National Park

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site
This itinerary is perfect for active travelers, couples, families, or anyone looking for an easy domestic adventure filled with hiking, scenic drives, wildlife, history, and iconic American landmarks. South Dakota often surprises first-time visitors with how much variety it offers in a relatively compact area, making it an ideal long weekend destination from Denver or other nearby western cities.

Badlands National Park
Need to know
If you have kids or do not want to travel one hour each way to Badlands, stay in the park at Cedar Pass Lodge or camp. Make reservations at Cedar Pass Lodge early if you want to stay in the park.
Bring water, snacks, and food, as Badlands does not have many conveniences and the drive outside the park to conveniences is not short.
Be aware of crowds and heat in South Dakota, especially Badlands National Park, in the summer.
Make reservations for dinner reservations, tours, and ranger-led tours early, especially in high season.
