Surf Synergy, Costa Rica: How a Girl Who Hates Cold Water and Has Never Surfed Came Home Obsessed
Curator’s statement

Surf Synergy in Jaco, Costa Rica, is one of those rare destinations that meets you exactly where you are and sends you home completely transformed. As someone who had never surfed and genuinely hates cold water, I came back obsessed. The warm Pacific waves, one-on-one coaching, daily yoga, incredible farm-to-table food, and included bodywork create an all-inclusive week that is equally perfect for solo travelers, friend groups, and families. This is not just a vacation—it is a reset for your body, your mind, and, honestly, your whole outlook.

Where to stay in Costa Rica

Let me set the scene for you. I am not a surfer. I have never surfed. I hate cold water. Like, deeply, genuinely hate it. So when I tell you I just returned from a surf and wellness retreat in Costa Rica and I am already going back in the fall—with a confirmed group, no less—I need you to understand what a statement that is.

Surf Synergy is located in Jaco on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, tucked between lush rainforest and the warm waves of the Pacific Ocean. It has been named Travel + Leisure's #1 Destination Spa in the World, and I am here to tell you that title is fully earned.

Here is what I did not expect: to feel so completely taken care of. I did not expect to feel so healthy and so restored at the same time. And I absolutely did not expect to stand up on a surfboard and feel like a completely different version of myself by the end of the week.

First day and up on a board

The structure of the week

This is a Saturday-to-Saturday all-inclusive experience. Every single thing is included and thought through. Here is what your week looks like:

  • One-on-one surf lessons five of the seven days, in the warm, beautiful Pacific Ocean with expert coaches who meet you exactly where you are. It doesn't matter if you have never touched a surfboard. Your coach will have you standing up, riding waves, and feeling genuinely proud of yourself. The lessons include video analysis so you can actually see what you are doing and improve in real time.

  • Daily yoga—and I mean yoga that actually fits where your body is. Some mornings it is vinyasa; some sessions are restorative. It perfectly complements the surf so your body is supported, not beaten up.

  • Two included bodywork sessions where you choose from massage, reflexology, or Reiki. Mine were some of the best bodywork I have ever had. I am not exaggerating. Their therapists are credentialed wellness professionals, and they know what they are doing.

  • Three incredible meals every day plus fresh fruit, natural juices, and snacks throughout. More on the food in a moment because it deserves its own conversation.

  • Breathwork, cold plunge, sauna, hot tub under the stars. Yes, I did the cold plunge. The same woman who hates cold water. And I felt incredible after.

  • The daily rhythm of this place—surf, yoga, nourish, restore, repeat—does something to your nervous system. By day three, I could feel the difference. By the end of the week, I felt restored in a way that a typical vacation rarely delivers.

Getting ready for the cold plunge

If I can do it, anyone can!

The food

I cannot stop talking about the food. Most of what you eat is grown on the property—ingredients pulled directly from their organic gardens, fruit trees, and even an on-site honey farm. Three meals a day that are fresh, flavorful, and genuinely nourishing. Not spa food that leaves you hungry. Real, beautiful, farm-to-table food that makes you realize how much what you put in your body matters. I came home feeling lighter and healthier than I have in a long time, and I truly believe the food had as much to do with that as the movement.

Being taken out of my comfort zone (and loving it)

I want to be honest with you the way I always try to be. I was nervous. Cold water, no surfing background, the unknown of what a week like this would feel like. What I found was an environment built specifically for people like me. The coaches are patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your progress. The community of guests around you is warm and real. There is something about learning something completely new alongside strangers that turns them into people you don't want to leave.

And the waves. The Pacific Coast at Jaco is warm. I cannot stress this enough for those of you who, like me, have refused to surf because the idea of cold water is a dealbreaker. This is not cold-water surfing in a wetsuit. This is warm, glorious, forgiving ocean with your coach right beside you.

I stood up. Multiple times. And then I came home and booked a group trip for the fall.

Just a gorgeous location to relax and enjoy

Need to know

Who is this for?

Everyone. Genuinely.

  • Solo travelers—this is a perfect solo experience. The retreat structure means you are never navigating it alone, and the community aspect is built into the week. I would send any solo traveler here without hesitation.

  • Friend groups—a group trip here is something your friends will talk about for years. It is active and immersive, and the shared experience of learning to surf together creates memories that go deeper than a beach trip.

  • Families—Kids 5 and older can participate in all surf experiences. This is an incredible option for active families who want a vacation that actually means something and sends everyone home feeling better than when they arrived.

The property only has 14 rooms, which means this is intimate and personal, not a large resort situation. You are known by name. The team works with you before you even arrive to tailor the experience to your goals.

The value

All-inclusive in the truest sense of the word. Surf lessons, yoga, bodywork, all meals, breathwork, recovery therapies—it is all in. For what you receive, the value here is genuinely remarkable. This is not a budget retreat in terms of the experience you have, but when you add up what is included, it makes complete sense.

I came home a different person than the one who left. Relaxed. Restored. Stronger. And honestly, a little obsessed with surfing—which I never in a million years thought I would say.

If you are curious, reach out. I am happy to walk through all of it with you and help you figure out if this is the right fit.
