Ethereal Days, Cretan Nights: My Stay at Heraklion’s White Gem
Curator’s statement

Staying at Ethereal White Resort in Heraklion wasn’t just a vacation—it was a chance to create lasting memories with my daughter as we uncovered the magic of Crete together. After days spent exploring ancient ruins, wandering through storybook villages, and basking on sunlit beaches, returning to the resort felt like a true homecoming. We’d unwind at the gorgeous rooftop bar, watching the sun slip into the sea, or relax at the serene spa, grateful for the peaceful luxury that wrapped around us. Ethereal White wasn’t just a place to stay—it became part of our story, reminding me how travel deepens not just our view of the world, but also the bonds we share with the people we love most.

Ethereal White Resort at night

Our trip to Heraklion was the perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation, with Ethereal White Resort as the ideal home base. One of the highlights was visiting the Palace of Knossos—walking through the ruins of Europe’s oldest city felt like stepping back in time. My daughter and I loved imagining the lives of the Minoans as we explored the labyrinthine corridors and colorful frescoes. It was an experience that sparked curiosity and wonder, making history come alive in a way no book or documentary ever could.

Another favorite moment was a small-group tour of the olive oil factory, Rizomio, where we saw firsthand how Crete’s famous liquid gold is produced. Tasting fresh-pressed olive oil right at the source was an unforgettable treat, and the guide’s passion for his family’s craft made it so much more than just a tasting; we left with a deeper appreciation for the care and tradition behind every bottle.

Some of our favorite meals came from cozy, family-owned tavernas we stumbled upon in tiny villages—the kind where grandma is in the kitchen, dad is serving, and you’re treated like part of the family. A favorite was Amolia. On a day in Agios Nikolaos, we lingered at a waterfront café, sampled gelato and watched the boats, feeling completely at home even thousands of miles away.

For clients considering this destination, I’d recommend combining days of sightseeing with intentional downtime. Ethereal White Resort’s rooftop bar is magical at sunset—it became our evening ritual to watch the sun dip below the horizon, often chatting with fellow travelers and swapping stories about the day. The on-site spa also offers a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring. Families with teens, couples, or mother-daughter travelers like us would especially love it here—it’s a place that balances adventure with luxury and gives you space to connect, whether over a shared meal or a quiet moment by the sea.

I’d recommend Heraklion and the surrounding area to anyone craving a mix of cultural discovery, coastal beauty, and indulgent relaxation. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie eager to taste authentic Cretan flavors, or simply looking to slow down and soak in island life, this destination offers something special.

My biggest tip? Be open to detours and conversations. Crete’s true magic isn’t just in the ancient ruins or stunning views—it’s in the warmth of the people, the spontaneous connections, and the simple moments that turn into lifelong memories. Let yourself be surprised—you’ll come home with far more than just souvenirs.

Need to know

Crete is a place best enjoyed when you embrace its slower rhythm—we quickly learned that trying to rush from one landmark to the next meant missing the little joys in between. Renting a car made it easy to reach places like Knossos and Agios Nikolaos, but we also discovered that local taxis were a fun part of the experience. One of our drivers cheerfully played Greek music for us and pointed out his favorite bakery along the way—we ended up stopping there later for the best spanakopita of the trip!
