A favorite was Amolia. On a day in Agios Nikolaos, we lingered at a waterfront café, sampled gelato and watched the boats, feeling completely at home even thousands of miles away.

Crete is a place best enjoyed when you embrace its slower rhythm—we quickly learned that trying to rush from one landmark to the next meant missing the little joys in between. Renting a car made it easy to reach places like Knossos and Agios Nikolaos, but we also discovered that local taxis were a fun part of the experience. One of our drivers cheerfully played Greek music for us and pointed out his favorite bakery along the way—we ended up stopping there later for the best spanakopita of the trip!
